Minneapolis shooter's family feared mental illness

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Andrew Engeldinger's parents were worried about their son's growing paranoia. In 2010, they sought help, enrolling in a 12-week class for families of the mentally ill.

For the last 21 months, the family said they reached out in hopes he would seek treatment. It was to no avail, as Engeldinger spurned their attempts at contact.

On Thursday night, they learned he was the gunman in Minnesota's deadliest workplace shooting. Police say Engeldinger fatally shot five people and injured three at Accent Signage Systems in Minneapolis before turning the gun on himself.

"It's not unusual when you're isolating yourself, which we know that he did, that eventually the only people you have left is your family and your co-workers, and often your paranoia translates to them," Sue Abderholden, a mental health organization executive who is serving as spokeswoman for Engeldinger's family, said Saturday.

Police say the 36-year-old Engeldinger shot and killed Reuven Rahamim, the founder of Accent Signage Systems; employees Ronald Edberg, Rami Cooks and Jacob Beneke; and Keith Basinski, a UPS driver who made a delivery at the wrong time. Two other employees remained hospitalized, one in critical condition and the other in serious condition.

The officers who responded to what Police Chief Tim Dolan called a "hellish scene" eventually found Engeldinger's body in the basement. Officers who searched his south Minneapolis home later Thursday found another gun and packaging for 10,000 rounds of ammunition.

Police and company representatives have not yet said why Engeldinger was fired from a job he had held since the late 1990s.

Jim Dow, a sales representative who frequently visited the business, said Saturday that he'd spoken to Accent employees and family members of victims. He said they told him that in recent months, Engeldinger had been running afoul of managers with confrontational behavior and unexplained absences from work.

"He was getting mouthy, belligerent," Dow said. Cooks, who's been described as Rahamim's right-hand man, "would take him aside and tell him that's not acceptable," Dow said. "He'd straighten up for a while and then this would crop up again."

Dolan said it was clear that Engeldinger targeted some victims while bypassing others. Many of those killed or injured were management.

Engeldinger wasn't always a problematic employee.

Barry Lawrence, an ex-employee, trained Engeldinger on a sign engraving machine and recalled that he was "sharp, intelligent." He said though Engeldinger mostly kept to himself, he'd occasionally join his co-workers for drinks after work.

But, upon hearing of the shooting, Lawrence said he had a gut reaction.

"To tell you the truth, my first thought was Andy," said Lawrence, who left Accent in 2003. "He was pleasant enough to work around, but he just seemed a little off all the time. You get a feeling about people, nothing you can put your finger on."

Abderholden, the executive director of Minnesota's chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, said she didn't know when Engeldinger's family first became worried that he had a mental illness. Two years ago, Chuck and Carolyn Engeldinger ? who raised Andy and his two siblings in the Minneapolis suburb of Richfield ? enrolled in NAMI's free, 12-week "Family to Family" course.

The classes, offered nationwide and taught by people who have had loved ones suffer from mental illness, include scientific and medical information about causes and symptoms, as well as concrete steps for trying to deal with the sufferer. They also have guidance for family members to cope.

"Sometimes it doesn't work, but you still are at least armed with the information to help you know what to do," Abderholden said.

Andrew Engeldinger never sought treatment to his family's knowledge, Abderholden said, and was never diagnosed with a specific illness. It wasn't long after his parents took the class that he cut off contact with the family, although Abderholden said she didn't know if pressure to seek help led to the estrangement.

The Engeldingers declined an interview request.

As he withdrew, Engeldinger's main point of contact with the outside world appeared to be his job. Several people in the Minneapolis neighborhood where he bought a home in 2004 said they never exchanged more than pleasantries.

Brian Jorgensen, who lived next door, said they only occasionally acknowledged each other when both were cutting the grass or shoveling sidewalks. He said Engeldinger wore sunglasses all the time.

Engeldinger was "just a quiet person who kept to himself but did not engage with us. And we didn't engage with him either because it just felt like he didn't want that kind of contact."

Outside of Accent Signage on Saturday, some residents of the Bryn Mawr neighborhood laid flowers at a memorial. Another swept up leaves in front.

A father-son duo of UPS employees, Dan and Nathaniel Miller, walked around the building and prayed. Basinski's death "hit me really hard," Dan Miller told the Star Tribune.

Abderholden said the likelihood of violence by a mentally ill person is very low, and that Engeldinger's family wouldn't have had reason to suspect he was capable of such violent acts. She called the family "extremely close" and said they are distraught.

"They just have deep sorrow about what happened, and if there was any way they could bring those lives back they would," Abderholden said. "They don't want to detract from the focus on those lives."

Is Obama killing the Washington Post?

September 29, 2012 4:55 PM Is Obama killing the Washington Post?

By Simon van Zuylen-Wood

Today?s Washington Post, surely with a heavy heart, reported that the company was shutting down nine of its Kaplan college campuses, while consolidating four others. Wash Post owns Kaplan, which runs for-profit colleges and test-prep services. This news comes on the heels of the company?s latest earnings report, which found that Kaplan-generated revenue had fallen 84%, due in large part to declining college enrollment.

The Post purchased Kaplan in 1984, and by ?07, Kaplan accounted for half the company?s revenue, essentially keeping the company afloat amid flagging print advertising and subscription numbers. Now, Kaplan?s struggling too, and bringing the Post?s balance sheet down with it.

A big reason for that seems to be the Obama administration?s own crackdown on for-profit colleges. In June 2011, the Administration announced it would pull funding from schools whose students? debt/income ratio was too high; this past July, it identified nearly 100 for-profit schools in danger of losing that aid. Essentially, the idea behind the regulations was to prevent for-profit schools from preying on vulnerable students (using slick advertisements and get-educated-quick schemes), by saddling them with debt their new degrees wouldn?t help them pay off. If they even finished with a degree.

As Suzy Khimm wrote earlier this summer:

?There is little evidence of a return to any certificate or degree from a for-profit,? the researchers write in a new paper for the National Bureau of Economic Research. By contrast, students who receive degrees ?from a public or not-for-profit institution receive a large wage premium,? they explain, boosting their earnings by as much as 15 percent.

Kaplan?s for-profit colleges, as Vanity Fair reported in April, are no exception.

In recent years, as many as 30 percent of Kaplan Higher Education students were defaulting on their loans within three years. Kaplan has been sued by several former employees, accusing the company of activities such as cooking the books on job-placement rates to ensure continued eligibility for federal student-aid programs.

To add insult to injury, Kaplan?s higher ed division feeds on federal government funds, with 90% of their cash coming from Education Department grants. So they?re soaking us too.

All this would be easier to stomach if it wasn?t bringing down the Post with it. On one hand, it seems Obama administration efforts are working; shady for-profit schools are getting their comeuppance. On the other hand, because the Post entered a partnership 30 years ago with a company that looked very different than it does today (no higher-ed involvement), it?s suffering at the hands of successful liberal reform.

Makes one wish Graham hadn?t let Mark Zuckerberg back out of the Post?s 2005 agreement to invest in Facebook. If the Post had retained the share it was originally due, according to one estimate, it might have brought in as much $7 billion dollars, more than twice the current market capitalization of the company.

UCLA researchers say last year's Carmageddon improved air quality

The reprieve lasted for only one weekend, but UCLA researchers say that last year's Carmageddon closure of the 405 Freeway rid Los Angeles of both traffic and another notorious problem: pollution.

Air quality near the closed 10-mile portion of the freeway reached levels 83% better than typical weekends, according to research released Friday by a team at UCLA's Institute of the Environment and Sustainability.

More striking, the researchers say, air quality also improved 75% in parts of West Los Angeles and Santa Monica, suggesting that whole swaths of residents stayed off the road in those areas. Overall, air quality across the region was 25% better than normal.

"Seeing such a dramatic reduction [in pollutants] in West L.A. was really quite surprising," said Suzanne Paulson, one of the professors leading the research. "It gives a very dramatic view of how clean the air could be."

As soon as traffic returned the following week, the improvements vanished, Paulson said. But area residents have another chance to breathe some fresh air starting Saturday.

More than 14 months after the initial closure, workers will again shut down a portion of the 405 Freeway, this time to demolish the northern end of the Mulholland Drive bridge. The construction is part of a $1-billion project that will include adding a carpool lane.

Paulson and Sam Atwood, a spokesman for the South Coast Air Quality Management District, both said they hope the freeway will one day be filled with electric vehicles or other low-emission cars. Atwood said Los Angeles still has the "worst air quality in the country." Research has linked exposure to near-roadway pollutants to an increased risk of asthma, heart attack, stroke, premature births and other health problems.

Atwood said the study's findings were not all that surprising but illustrate the "significant effect" cars, and especially trucks, have on air quality. He estimated that vehicular traffic is responsible for about half of all air pollution.

City leaders and transit officials have asked residents to stay out of their cars and "eat, shop and play locally" during this weekend's closure. But the average person probably won't be able to tell the difference in air quality even if cars stay home, Paulson said.

The professor and her colleague, Yifang Zhu, don't plan to conduct another study during this weekend's closure, and haven't yet published a paper on last year's findings.

So perhaps the only way for people to gauge the quality of the air they are breathing will be to look to the streets and count the cars.

Green Blog: Leopard Poaching on the Rise, Group Warns

When it comes to the poaching of endangered species, elephants, tigers and rhinos tend to be in the limelight. But a new report sets out to plug the information gap on a different species that is imperiled by a tide of demand related to rising affluence in Asia: leopards.

In India alone, an average of at least four leopards have been poached each week over the last 10 years, according to Traffic, an organization that monitors the trade in endangered wildlife around the globe and issued the report. That?s more than 2,000 in one decade.

The estimate is based on a review of seizures of spotted leopard skins and other body parts. While most of the items seized were skins, other body parts, particularly bones, are prescribed as substitutes for tiger parts in traditional Asian medicine, Traffic said.

?Even though reports of illegal trade in leopard body parts are disturbingly frequent, the level of threat to leopards in the country has previously been unrecognized and has fallen into our collective ?blind spot?,? said Rashid Raza, the lead author of the report, which was released on Friday in New Delhi.

There are no reliable estimates of how many leopards exist in India. The animals are notoriously wary of humans and are spread out over large areas, so tracking their numbers is difficult.

Yet the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, which categorizes leopards as ?near threatened? on its so-called red list of species, says that leopard populations have become extinct in some parts of the world and dwindled to tiny numbers in others. Although they dwell widely in the forests of the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia and China, they are ?becoming increasingly rare outside protected areas,? the organization says.

Divyabhanusinh Chavda, president of the World Wildlife Fund?s India chapter, said that concerted national action was needed. ?Without an effective strategy to assess and tackle the threats posed by illegal trade, the danger is that leopard numbers may decline rapidly, as happened previously to the tiger,? he said.

Government estimates put the number of tigers in India at little more than 1,700.

RolePlayGateway?

You've been created for this moment. Created for this specific purpose. You have the potential to continue a person's life, to give them another chance. Allow them the honour of going further. The cost?
Your life.

Okay, so I have four spots open (both male and female) in my new roleplay "Cultured"
Please note, this is a literate, and advanced rp, so you need to be thinking of this as you make your character profiles.

Plotline:
Clones have now been legalised. And almost every person able to afford them has at least one. They are nothing special. Simple cells taken from an embryo implanted with an identical nucleus to the baby that was wanted. The cultured embryo's grow into an exact replica of their accepted human. They are kept in a Cultured Village, and most of them live there happily until the end of their life span. That is if they aren't needed. If something goes wrong with the Accepted Human, then there are always spare parts on hand. Since technically the clone has the same cells, and due to their intensive care, are normally healthier, the organs or tissue are much less likely to be rejected by the body as foreign material. Thus the human race now will never have to live in fear of waiting for an organ donor. And it isn't as though the clones are human. They were created, their not born. And technically speaking the embryo's would have been discarded, so really we have given them a better life. Not only that, but not all are needed, not everyone gets sick.
Your characters are the clones. They live in the Cultured Village. They don't know there purpose, or that there are people outside their dome that are identical to themselves. They live in complete ignorance until one particular error...One escapes.
Not to fear, he was recaptured and for a while he was held under the intensive care unit to make sure he wouldn't endanger the whole project. After months of good behaviour he was released back into his original village, though he is under careful watch and is not permitted to speak of his discoveries.
He now wants to get out (obviously), however
Now that he knows what dangers the others are in, he also may wish to get others out. The problem is he will have to be fairly discreet, as the Carers are watching.

US consumer spending rose 0.5 percent in August

(AP) ? Americans boosted their spending in August even though their income barely grew. Much of the spending increase went to pay higher gas prices, which may have forced consumers to cut back elsewhere.

The Commerce Department said Friday that consumer spending rose 0.5 percent in August from July. It was the biggest jump since February.

Still, the increase was driven by a 1.7 percent surge in purchases of nondurable goods. That largely reflected a sharp rise in gas prices during the month. Spending on durable goods rose 0.3 percent, helped by gains in auto sales. Spending on services rose just 0.2 percent.

Income rose just 0.1 percent in August, reflecting the weak job growth. Taking into account inflation, after-tax incomes actually fell 0.3 percent in August ? the poorest performance since November.

High unemployment and weak wage growth have kept Americans from spending more freely, which has held back growth. Consumer spending drives nearly 70 percent of economic activity.

The economy grew at an annual rate of 1.3 percent in the April-June quarter, the government reported Tuesday. That's down from the 2 percent growth rate in the January-March quarter and far too weak to lower the unemployment rate, which was 8.1 percent in August.

Earlier this month, the government released a mixed report on retail spending that showed that consumers are feeling pinched by higher gas prices.

Consumers spent 0.9 percent more at retail businesses in August from July. But excluding the impact of gas prices and a sizeable increase in auto sales, retail sales rose just 0.1 percent. The retail sales report showed Americans cut back on clothing, electronics and at general merchandise outlets.

Gas prices rose more than 50 cents per gallon in July and August, but have since leveled off.

There have been some positive signs that spending could pick up. A measure of consumer confidence jumped this month to its highest level since February. Steady gains in home prices, along with record-low mortgage rates, have helped fuel a modest recovery in the housing market.

And a report Thursday offered some hope that the job market will strengthen. Weekly applications for unemployment benefits plunged 26,000 to a seasonally adjusted 359,000. That's the lowest level in two months.

Still, most economists expect only modest hiring gains when the government releases the September employment report next week. The forecast is that employers added roughly 100,000 jobs, about the same as in August.

ESADE Law School professor warns of cloud computing security risks at IP&IT Forum

Experts say the benefits of "getting on the cloud" include reduced costs for businesses, simplifying ICT use and environmental efficiency

Visualizar imágen en alta resolución

Despite the uncertainties surrounding the subject, Professor Ramon Miralles had the following to say, "Cloud computing is both the present and the future; we have to get out there, but not at any price". Professor Miralles is Co-ordinator of Auditing and Computer Security with the Catalan Data Protection Authority, Board member of the Spanish Chapter of the Cloud Security Alliance and Lecturer on ESADE's IP&IT Master Programme. Along similar lines, Daniel Gabarre, Attorney at the J. Isern Patent and Trademark Office added: "The cloud is the new computing paradigm; it's usually explained from the standpoint of the risks involved, but without taking into account that it can also represent a great opportunity for companies." Specific aspects of how this new storage system will be put into practice for businesses were detailed in the first session of the fourth edition of the IP&IT Forum (Intellectual Property and Information Society) held at ESADE Law School.

Loss of control
One issue that has caused most debate and concern among users is related to the security and storage of confidential data. In Professor Miralles' opinion, although the cloud is inherently "neither safe nor unsafe," the same cannot be said of how it is managed. "Cloud computing is synonymous with loss of control." This is how the professor defines the problem regarding security. The problem, as such, stems from the fact that the client contracting the service hands over data storage and management to a third party while remaining responsible for the information.

According to Professor Miralles, this problem is compounded by the lack of information provided by cloud computing suppliers: "We don't have enough information to carry out proper risk analysis so that the person responsible for this data can be sure of its proper management," he explained. This loss of control is amplified by a "lack of transparency from cloud computing service providers in terms of explaining to us the legal conditions under which these services are to be provided".

Responsibility for data
The security risks involved in cloud computing are highly related to the contractual relationship between the client and supplier providing these storage services. That is, the person responsible for handling the data is responsible for its safekeeping, regardless of whether it is in the hands of a third party. In addition, they should also verify that the provider complies with the legislative aspects regarding the protection of personal data. Therefore, Professor Miralles advised, "look for a provider who is will to sit down with you and negotiate the service terms."

Benefits of cloud computing
Despite the important aspects to consider when it comes to "getting on the cloud", there are also great potential benefits. According to Professor Miralles, it will bring greater economic efficiency and simplify the use of ICT, but it will also provide more possibilities in terms of using applications and creating new ways of accessing information. Furthermore, cloud computing is more environmentally friendly given that it "uses shared data processing centres that are more energy efficient," explained the expert.

TEDxAmsterdam ? The Nature of Passion

What?s with all the inspired people? Organizers, advisers, partners and other supporters of TEDxAmsterdam gathered at the Mayor?s home for the unveiling of this year?s line-up of all-star speakers. The evening began with a gathering in a grand and elegant room by deputy mayor Caroline Gehrels, embellished with intricate gold and red d?cor, topped off with a spectacular chandelier in the middle. Guests excitedly conversed and greeted new friends.

Astrid Elburg, member of the TEDxAmsterdam Braintrust

The first guests I had the pleasure of meeting were two women involved in the organization and advisory of TEDxAmsterdam and TEDxAmsterdamWomen. I made it a goal to understand why it is all these guests are passionate about TEDx, so I inquired and was not the least bit disappointed with their responses. Brain Trust member, Astrid Elburg, shared that she most looks forward to seeing speakers who ?bring a sparkle? and who are able to use the fire within and share it with the audience. She described the beauty of TEDx to bring people together from all over the world and to ?open peoples? minds?. Astrid also highlighted it as an innovative way for people to learn, whether they are being moved by them in the audience or watching online. Interestingly, I agreed when she emphasized the feeling aspect of TEDx events, and how they reach into peoples? core.

A different take on TED

Peter van Lindonk, TED fan, TEDxAmsterdam speaker and Braintrust member

Another stand out Brain Trust guest amongst the many in the room was Peter van Lindonk. An innovator and social change-maker in his own right, Peter is so passionate about the power of events like TED that he was inspired to start his own PINC conference. After attending five TED events in the United States he was determined to bring this unique and profound experience to Europe. When asked what he looks forward to in the upcoming TEDxAmsterdam edition, he excitedly commented, ?I go for the bouquet, never for a flower!?. It was an eloquent reminder that any TEDx taken as a whole is much more powerful and moving. I was aware of the aura and key features of TEDx events at this partner meeting. An experience that appeals to all of one?s senses: sight, sound, emotion, mind and more!

Cherishing a love for life

It was a joy to discuss with people how TEDx has touched them each differently, and yet always significantly. Many cherish TEDx for enabling people to meet, raise awareness and share ideas. Many look forward to the audience?s reactions and the impact of the speaker. Through all my conversations with TEDxAmsterdam organizers and leaders there was one constant. You could always sense the passion that drives these individuals and has made them a committed and hardworking team. Performer Celine Cairo captured this phenomenon with her reference to being a ?TEDx junkie?. She followed by explaining that she is so passionate about TEDx because it has reminded her of her love for life, a notion I think most TED supporters can relate to.

I for one had a unique experience: without ever attending a TEDx conference first hand, I?ve already sensed a touch of TED by talking to these passionate TEDxAmsterdam fans.

Police: Student shoots self at Okla. junior high

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) ? A gunshot rang out at an Oklahoma junior high school before classes began Wednesday, terrifying teenagers who feared a gunman was on the loose.

Soon, though, students learned no one else was in danger. One of their eighth-grade classmates had taken his own life, shooting himself in the head with a handgun in the hall, authorities said.

"Throughout the entire thing, we all thought someone shot someone else," said student Paiton Gardner, 14. "We didn't know it was a suicide. We were freaking out."

Some students bolted outside Stillwater Junior High. Staffers quickly locked down the building and evacuated the rest of the school's 700 eighth- and ninth-graders, along with students from an adjacent elementary school, police Capt. Randy Dickerson said.

Dickerson said the 13-year-old didn't leave a note, and authorities said they don't know why he killed himself. Superintendent Ann Caine, who oversees the district about 70 miles west of Tulsa, said there weren't any reports that the teen had been bullied.

"There is no indication that that's what occurred," Caine said. She said the teen was a good student who got along with other kids.

About 120 people attended a vigil Wednesday evening at Highland Park United Methodist Church.

Hana Sumpter, a 14-year-old eight-grader, said she was friends with the boy and was standing nearby when the student shot himself.

"I heard the gunshot. I turned around and he was on the floor," Sumpter said, adding that he had given no indication of problems beforehand.

The Rev. Derrek Belase led the group in prayer. Members of the student's family did not attend the service.

Police wouldn't say where the weapon came from or how the eighth-grader got it into the school. Caine said there aren't any metal detectors but expects there will be discussions about the policy.

Gardner said she realized something was wrong early Wednesday when students began to run past her.

"People looked terrified," said Gardner, a ninth-grader. "The football coach was like, 'Get out, get out! Someone's been shot.'"

She and other students sprinted down the hallway, passing blood on the wall and floor as she ran to a nearby playground.

Another ninth-grader, Jake Green, said he heard the single shot ring out after he and dozens of other students gathered to pray before school.

"We heard this loud boom and everyone just got quiet," Green said. "No one said a word."

A teacher told the students to get out of the building, Green said.

"Everyone was really scared. We didn't know if the kid shot himself or if there was a shooter outside the school who shot in," Green said. "Everyone didn't know what was going on, so they were screaming and running as fast as they could to get to the playground."

Some students wore superhero costumes Wednesday as part of an effort to raise cancer awareness, but Dickerson said the student who shot himself didn't appear to be dressed up.

"If was wearing a costume, it wasn't evident to me," Dickerson said.

Green said students who were already in their classrooms were locked in the building for about an hour. Parents were told to pick up their children at a nearby shopping center.

"It was really scary," Green said. "Everyone's kind of traumatized and doesn't know how to act or respond."

Kenny Monday told The Associated Press that his son, Kennedy, heard the gunshot but did not witness the shooting.

"It's so sad that the kid lost his life, but we're just glad he didn't shoot anyone else," Monday said.

Electronic Arts Buys Online Gaming Development Studio ESN ...

Electronic Arts continues to beef up its cloud-based gaming offerings. Today it was announced that it is buying ESN, developers of the Planet web-based games framework, for an undisclosed sum. The two companies had already been working together, namely on Battlelog, an online social-web component for EA?s Battlefield 3. The news was announced on ESN?s blog.

?We couldn?t be more excited about this opportunity and the team is looking forward to focus all of its energy on DICE [EA's existing Swedish studio], Battlelog and the Battlefield series,? the company?s founders write.

In addition to the Planet framework for web applications, ESN has two other products for games developers looking to publish content on the web: Beaconpush and Sonar. The first of these, Beaconpush, is a push service for developers creating real-time web apps using HTML5 WebSockets and Comet. Sonar, meanwhile, is a?cloud-based hosted service, available via an API, that developers can use to integrate voice communication into their online games.

Taken together, this couldbe a sign that EA could use the platforms to bring in more third-partly publishers under the EA umbrella, but it could also be a way for EA to build up its own games. We understand from a source that EA is likely, at least at first, to use it more for the latter. EA has been using ESN?s technology for the Battlelog web component of Battlefield, and ?that?technology is very valuable to EA and its systems,? our source says. Nevertheless, it?s a small team of under 25 people and is unlikely to be a massive acquisition. The acquisition, we?ve heard, was actually completed back in June, but the companies only decided to announce it today.

We are reaching out to EA for a comment on how ESN will fit in with its strategy. The company has confirmed the acquisition to TechCrunch on the phone ? but it has declined to elaborate on how the acquisition will fit with its strategy, or how large the deal size is.

In the blog post announcing the deal, ESN also notes that it is on the lookout to hire more developers.

EA already had Dice in Sweden so this is a sign that the two will continue to work together in the country. We are reaching out to ask more questions, as well as to see if we can get more clarity on the financial terms of the deal.

Electronic Arts, which started as a games publisher for consoles, has over the last few years been trying to reposition itself to be closer to where its audience is moving: into online social and casual gaming and mobile. In that, it has had some run-ins with other companies also trying to keep strong positions in those spaces. It is currently suing Zynga, alleging that the social games maker?s The Ville is a ripoff of its Sims Social Facebook game.

Buying studios like ESN are a large part of how it hopes to continue beefing up its digital, online gaming business. In the last quarter, Q1 FY2013, EA noted that GAAP net revenues for its digital business were $342 million, compared to $592 million for net publishing packaged goods revenues.

The move to rethink its games as ?services? rather than packaged goods has also meant some restructuring, as CEO John Riccitiello pointed out in its quarterly earnings call in May. Just yesterday it was announced that it was closing the Dublin office of PopCap, making nearly 100 employees redundant, as part of a bigger re-org and downsizing of the Seattle-based studio, which EA bought in July 2011 for $750 million, with a potential earnout taking that to $1.3 billion.

In July, the company said that Q1 FY GAAP net revenues were $4.1 billion. EA expects to have lower GAAP net revenue in the current quarter, of between $3.90 to $4.05 billion.

Report: Google hopes to have Maps app on iPhone by end of year

14 hrs.

With so much drama around the?Maps app in the latest?iPhone software upgrade, people are excited about a report that Google should have a new iOS Maps app out by year's?end.

In iOS 6, Apple's newly released?mobile operating system upgrade, the Cupertino-based company decided to do away with the Maps app created by Google and replaced it with its own version. While the change has clear strategic advantages ? why should Apple give its chief competitor a featured spot on the iOS home screen ? people were justifiably riled up because?Apple's new Maps app is still in its infancy (despite being powered by TomTom's widely used?Tele Atlas maps).?

Though the furor got out of hand ? for most people, the maps work fine and the app brings a free turn-by-turn navigation service to the iPhone for the first time ? Apple's solution is not as solid as Google's well-established version. There were some pitchforks, there were some torches, and there were a lot of dramatic blog posts.

If people are finally calming down, it's at least in part to do with the fact that?they aren't limited to the apps which are built into iOS 6 as well as the likelihood that Google will develop a new?Maps app for iOS. And now, according to a report in the New York Times, that is indeed what is happening.

Google is building this app for the iPhone (and iPad), and is "seeking to finish by the end of the year," says the Times' report. The delay is in part due to the fact that Google wants to build a pretty 3-D version of its Maps for Apple users, says the report, and may consider combining the existing Google Earth app for iPhone with the new Maps app.

This information comes via "people involved with the effort who declined to be named because of the nature of their work," so naturally a small amount of?skepticism?should be maintained.

As far as any official word goes, all we know is that on Tuesday, during a press event in Tokyo, Google's executive chairman Eric Schmidt said that that the company had "not done anything yet" in regards to a Google Maps app for iOS.?This could easily to?posturing (why not sell a few more Android phones while the anger is high?).?

Any decision regarding whether a Google Maps app would be accepted into the Apple App Store would have to be made by Apple, Schmidt explained, according to Reuter's Kevin Krolicki, but since Apple permits many would-be competing apps from Google, Amazon and others, it seems likely that a Google?Maps app would go through just fine.?

So what do you do while twiddling your thumbs and waiting for Google to make its move (and for Apple to hopefully approve of that move)? You can use an alternative app?or the Web version of Google Maps.

Or you can just tough it out with Apple's new Maps app.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Used-car clunkers to avoid

With the average new car selling for around $30,000, and even a moderately equipped compact model going for close to $20,000 these days, cash-strapped motorists have little choice but to purchase a used vehicle.

Unfortunately, a relatively short supply of pre-owned models ? precipitated by the 2007-2009 economic recession, when fewer new vehicles were purchased or leased ? continues to keep used-car values at or near record-high levels according to the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) Used Car Guide.

What?s more, even though today?s cars tend to last far longer than did models from 20 or more years ago, like fine wines some tend to age better than comparable models of the same vintage. With used-car values already out of whack, shoppers need to be extra cautious to avoid compounding an already unfavorable financial situation by selecting a more problematic model that will require costly out-of-warranty repair work.

To that end we?ve compiled the accompanying rogues gallery of 10 used cars to avoid, based on data we?ve compiled from multiple sources including reliability surveys, safety ratings, resale values and our own experiences road-testing the vehicles over the years.

Forbes.com slideshow: 10 used cars to avoid

Our selections are largely based on both initial-quality/performance and long-term reliability reports for model-year 2008 and 2009 vehicles conducted by Consumer Reports and J.D. Power and Associates. All of the models in our list were rated as being below average in overall reliability by both organizations.

Consumer Reports bases its durability findings on data supplied by owners of 1.3 million vehicles, while J.D. Power?s findings were compiled from information supplied by 43,700 original owners of 2008 model-year vehicles and 31,000 original owners of 2009 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. Both sources polled participants regarding mechanical and other problems experienced during the prior 12 months.

While we?ve included used cars to avoid in most market segments, we came down especially hard this year on a number of under-performing luxury vehicles, including the BMW X5 SUV, and the Cadillac STS, Jaguar XF and Lincoln MKS sedans. Not only have used luxury-car prices skyrocketed by about 22 percent from 2009-2011, according to the NADA Used Car Guide, but the cost of replacement parts and labor tend to be considerably higher than with similar models from mainstream brands. (After all, there?s a reason that BMW and Mercedes-Benz dealers can treat their customers to posh service-department waiting rooms and the latest models as loaner cars.)

Those looking to the pre-owned market for a less expensive way to obtain upscale brand cachet often find themselves paying dearly for the privilege in terms of steeper repair bills. This is one segment in which we strongly recommend buying a late model ?certified? used car from a dealer that?s both been reconditioned and comes with a comprehensive warranty.

Other models in our list tend to be cars and trucks that not only missed the mark in terms of accommodations and performance as new cars but have only fared worse over time in terms of their dubious durability. These include lackluster models from model years 2008 and 2009 like the Chevrolet Aveo subcompact sedan and hatchback, Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger midsize sedans, Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickup trucks and the Dodge Nitro and Jeep Liberty sport-utility vehicles.

While we?ve always tended to favor the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans as new vehicles for their roomy and comfortable interiors and class-leading family friendly features, by all accounts models from 2008 and 2009 tend to lag behind the competition in terms of reliability. And nobody wants to the kids to be late to school or miss soccer practice because their ride suffers an untimely mechanical issue.

And then there?s the Jeep Wrangler, which remains beloved as a rough-and-tumble choice among the outdoorsy set, but as a used car, unsuspecting buyers can find it just too much to handle with a buckboard ride, stiff handling and added mechanical problems ? particularly from potential abuse at the hands of a former owner?s off-road exploits.

Of course, even a vehicle that boasts long-term reliability can prove to be a ?lemon? if its been abused, has hidden damage or was improperly maintained. That?s why it?s always prudent to have a trusted mechanic carefully inspect any used car or truck under your consideration to get an impartial evaluation of its operating condition. And always run a model?s vehicle identification number (VIN) through a title-search service like CarFax to make sure it hasn?t been previously flood-damaged or salvaged and subsequently rebuilt.

The good news for those considering a pre-owned vehicle is that analysts see used car prices taking an end-of summer dip, dropping an average 3.8 percent in August and between 3 percent and 3.5 percent in September, according to the NADA Used Car Guide.

?Over the next few months, we expect to see an acceleration in the decline of used-vehicle prices that usually begins as the summer season winds down,? says Jonathan Banks, senior analyst with the NADA. Expect prices to drop further over time as the inventory of used vehicles continues to grow concurrently as more models come off lease and added trade-ins from new-car sales fill dealers? lots. ?This means that for the first time in years, downside price risk is on the horizon in 2013 and even more so farther out into 2014,? Banks says.

Here's The Exact Reason Apple No Longer Has ... - Business Insider

Apple no longer has Google-based maps because Google wouldn't allow Apple to include voice guided turn-by-turn navigation directions in its mapping application, John Paczkowski at All Things D reports.

A source familiar with the situation tells Paczkowski, "There were a number of issues inflaming negotiations, but voice navigation was the biggest ... Ultimately, it was a deal-breaker."

Apple tried to negotiate with Google to get turn-by-turn navigation, but Google wouldn't give up that data without some concessions from Apple. Google wanted more Google branding in the maps as well as the inclusion of Lattitude, Google's Foursquare-esque social network that tracks people if they opt-in.

Apple didn't want to include either of those things in its maps. So it decided to do its own maps. The result has been a PR disaster for Apple. There are numerous complaints from users about mislabled, or just missing locations. Users are angry at Apple for removing Google-based maps for a product that's inferior. But, it looks like Apple might not have had much of a choice.

It was either going to have to offer maps that were missing turn-by-turn directions, thus making them weaker than Android, or it was going to have to ugly Google branding and hand over more user data to Google through Latitude.

Nanotechnology device aims to prevent malaria deaths through rapid diagnosis

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? A pioneering mobile device using cutting-edge nanotechnology to rapidly detect malaria infection and drug resistance could revolutionise how the disease is diagnosed and treated.

Around 800,000 people die from malaria each year after being bitten by mosquitoes infected with malaria parasites. Signs that the parasite is developing resistance to the most powerful anti-malarial drugs in south-east Asia and sub-Saharan Africa mean scientists are working to prevent the drugs becoming ineffective.

The ?5.2million (?4million) Nanomal project -- launched September 26-- is planning to provide an affordable hand-held diagnostic device to swiftly detect malaria infection and parasites' drug resistance. It will allow healthcare workers in remote rural areas to deliver effective drug treatments to counter resistance more quickly, potentially saving lives.

The device -- the size and shape of a mobile phone -- will use a range of latest proven nanotechnologies to rapidly analyse the parasite DNA from a blood sample. It will then provide a malaria diagnosis and comprehensive screening for drug susceptibility in less than 20 minutes, while the patient waits. With immediately available information about the species of parasite and its potential for drug resistance, a course of treatment personally tailored to counter resistance can be given.

Currently for malaria diagnosis, blood samples are sent to a central referral laboratory for drug resistance analysis, requiring time as well as specialised and expensive tests by skilled scientists. Additionally, confirmation of malaria is often not available where patients present with fever. Very often, drug treatments are prescribed before the diagnosis and drug resistance are confirmed, and may not be effective. Being able to treat effectively and immediately will prevent severe illness and save lives.

The Nanomal consortium is being led by St George's, University of London, which is working with UK handheld diagnostics and DNA sequencing specialist QuantuMDx Group and teams at the University of Tuebingen in Germany and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. It was set up in response to increasing signs that the malaria parasite is mutating to resist the most powerful class of anti-malaria drugs, artemisinins. The European Commission has awarded ?4million (?3.1million) to the project.

Nanomal lead Professor Sanjeev Krishna, from St George's, said: "Recent research suggests there's a real danger that artemisinins could eventually become obsolete, in the same way as other anti-malarials. New drug treatments take many years to develop, so the quickest and cheapest alternative is to optimise the use of current drugs. The huge advances in technology are now giving us a tremendous opportunity to do that and to avoid people falling seriously ill or dying unnecessarily."

QuantuMDx's CEO Elaine Warburton said: "Placing a full malaria screen with drug resistance status in the palm of a health professional's hand will allow instant prescribing of the most effective anti-malaria medication for that patient. Nanomal's rapid, low-cost test will further support the global health challenge to eradicate malaria."

The handheld device will take a finger prick of blood, extract the malarial DNA and then detect and sequence the specific mutations linked to drug resistance, using a nanowire biosensor. The chip electrically detects the DNA sequences and converts them directly into binary code, the universal language of computers. The binary code can then be readily analysed and even shared, via wireless or mobile networks, with scientists for real-time monitoring of disease patterns.

The device should provide the same quality of result as a referral laboratory, at a fraction of the time and cost. Each device could cost about the price of a smart phone initially, but may be issued for free in developing countries. A single-test cartridge will be around ?13 (?10) initially, but the aim is to reduce this cost to ensure affordability in resource-limited settings.

In addition to improving immediate patient outcomes, the project will allow the researchers to build a better picture of levels of drug resistance in stricken areas. It will also give them information on population impacts of anti-malarial interventions.

Clinical trials of the device are expected to begin within three years, after which it will be brought to market. The technology could be adapted afterwards for use with other infectious diseases.

How does the iPhone 5 battery life stack up?

Apple tells us that the iPhone 5 offers "even longer battery life" than any of its predecessors, but what does that really mean? Can the new smartphone keep up ?with ?? or beat ? the competition?

Laptop Mag's Mark Spoonauer conducted some thorough tests while reviewing the iPhone 5, just as he does when checking out other smartphones, to find out.

"Our test goes out and surfs 50 of the most popular websites in succession every 60 seconds," he told me,?in describing the testing procedures Laptop Mag sets up. "It's meant to mimic how people use their phones.?Every minute or so, you might take it out of your pocket and use it."

Apple claims that the iPhone 5 has enough battery power to offer "up to 8 hours of browsing on a cellular connection, up to 8 hours of talk time, and up to 10 hours of video playback time." In?Spoonauer's tests, the device "lasted 7 hours and 13 minutes."

To put that into perspective, consider that the Samsung Galaxy S III, a key?competitor, lasted for six hours and 55 minutes in Laptop Mag's tests. The iPhone 4S lasted five hours and 54 minutes, the HTC One X lasted 5 hours and 59 minutes, the Samsung?Galaxy Nexus lasted 3 hours and 40 minutes. The current champ, when it comes to battery life, is?the Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx, with a battery life of 8 hours and 25 minutes, according to Laptop Mag's tests.

"It simply has a bigger capacity battery," says Spoonauer, referring to the Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx. "At some point physics has to take over." There's only so much that Apple's clever software tweaks can do to boost the life of a rather small battery. Of course a device such as the?Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx stands a chance of outrunning the iPhone 5 thanks to sheer capacity. "It's amazing that it lasts as long as it does, given how small the battery is in comparison to the competition," Spoonauer points out.

"For the [battery] size, I think that the iPhone 5 offers fairly good battery life," he concludes before cautioning that he has seen some complaints about battery life?on Apple-centric forums.?

We put a lot of trust in Spoonauer's quantitative tests, though, and until the anecdotal evidence of poor battery performance is overwhelming, we'll maintain our faith in his assessment. This little gadget seems to last "longer on a charge than most 4G LTE phones."

As Fishes Migrate, Their Food Might Not Follow

Ocean species seeking cooler waters to survive may have to adapt to their new environments by changing their diets

Blue tang Image: NOAA

Monterey, Calif.?As Earth's atmosphere heats up due to global warming, the world's oceans will warm, too. All kinds of creatures, from the smallest plankton to the largest fishes, will be forced to adjust. Some of them may be able to adapt by altering their body chemistries, but the most likely response?for those that are free to travel (unlike oysters, say)?is simply to move.

Indeed, certain species of fish are migrating away from mid-latitude oceans toward cooler waters such as the Arctic Ocean, according to recent studies. Scientists are finding that, in general, larger ocean organisms such as fishes have less tolerance for temperature change than the microorganisms they consume, such as phytoplankton. So it is possible that as fishes migrate, their preferred food sources may not. To survive, the migrants may have to change their diet once they reach their new neighborhoods. Some of the most recent findings are being released for the first time at a symposium here this week called The Ocean in a High-CO2 World.

Of course, the fishes that already live in colder oceans may not appreciate the arrival of newcomers that could compete for their food. Yet the native species have their own challenges. Research is showing that fishes native to colder waters are even less tolerant of temperature changes than those in warmer waters, according to Hans-Otto P?rtner at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Germany. "The temperature range that fish are comfortable in decreases as latitude rises," he says. Over time, then, the mix of species could change. In cold northern waters, for example, sardine populations are dropping but anchovy populations are rising.

Other factors come into play: Increasing carbon dioxide emissions worldwide are making all oceans more acidic, forcing species to use more energy to adapt, leaving them with less energy to reproduce and grow. Oxygen levels in certain ocean regions are dropping, adding a third stressor to acidification and temperature rise. Scientists are beginning to unravel how these multiple stressors are affecting species across large spans of ocean, but much more data and analysis is needed. In the meantime, increasing numbers of species may be on the move. What they will eat once they reach their destinations, and which ocean inhabitants they may have to compete with, remains to be seen.

Transferring Vehicles to a Revocable Living Trust : North Carolina ...

The use of revocable living trusts to avoid probate is common in North Carolina.? However, one type of property that is rarely transferred to a living trust is automobiles, since doing so involves a trip to the local DMV office and paying to change the title.? The title fee is $40, and a highway use tax of 3% of the value of the vehicle must also be paid.? What the title agents often don't know, however, is that the use tax is capped at $40 for transfers to a living trust.? See N.C.G.S. Section 105-187.6(b)(2).? There is no use tax at all for transfers to a living trust in which the owner is the sole beneficiary, but this situation is not as common. N.C.G.S. Section 105-187.6(a)(11).

Here's link to the page on DMV's website that references transfers to a trust.

Given North Carolina's low threshold for requiring full probate - $20,000 for single decedents, and $30,000 for married decedents, it often makes sense to take the time and pay the $80 to transfer vehicles to your living trust.? This is especially true if the vehicle is particularly valuable or you plan or keeping it a long time.? It could save time, trouble and expense for your loved ones.

College Capitalizes on Technology

The Technological Evolution of the College Curriculum

College classes are now in sessions. Check out some these innovative classes that are paving the way for future tech entrepreneurs. Some of these classes weren?t even around twenty years ago.?School is back in session. College students across the nation are back to hitting the books, though perhaps not so literally anymore. As our culture has become increasingly computer-based over the last several decades, so too have college courses. Not only are college students using computers for their learning, but also computers have become their learning. Colleges and universities big and small are incorporating computer-related courses into their curriculum. Whether they cover the basics of computing or how technology can be used for entertainment and entrepreneurship, classes that were nonexistent 20 years ago are now flooding college campuses. Given the depth of this field, which often translates into ample job opportunities, it?s no wonder that more college students are trading English and biology for social media and video games. Below is a small sampling of the courses you can now find among the curriculum offered at many colleges and universities:

College Courses of the Future

  1. The Beauty and Joy of Computing
(University of California, Berkeley). The name says it all. In this class, college students study both the history of computing and how it impacts society. They also receive hands-on programming learning.
  1. Technology Entrepreneurship (Carnegie Mellon University).
For many, digital technology is all about the Benjamins, and for good reason. Many tech-based businesses have become wild successes, which is why colleges now offer courses teaching students how to identify entrepreneurial opportunities and capitalize on them.
  1. Social Media & Virtual Communities (Emory University Goizueta Business School).
What business doesn?t have a Facebook page or Twitter account nowadays? This course educates college students on how to effectively utilize social media branding within their business marketing strategies.
  1. Level Design & Development for Video Games (University of Southern California).
As this class demonstrates, college really can be all fun and games. Students learn both how to create a compelling storyline for this virtual platform and how to construct the mechanics for it.
