At Fortune Magazine's "Most Powerful Women" dinner? in Palo Alto, Calif., businesswoman Marissa Mayer, who was criticized for juggling a short maternity leave and her new role as Yahoo's CEO, says she has found balance by "ruthlessly prioritizing" God, family and then Yahoo, citing legendary Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi.

"The baby's been easy!" Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer told an invite-only crowd at a?Fortune?"Most Powerful Women" event on?Tuesday evening in Palo Alto, Calif.

"The baby's been way easier than everyone made it out to be. I think I've been really lucky that way but I had a?very easy, healthy pregnancy.?He's been easy. So those have been the two really terrific surprises: the kid has been easier and the job has been fun!" Mayer said, referring to her son, Macallister.?The crowd chuckled?along with her.

It turns out the former Google executive, known for her planning skills and extensive use of spreadsheets to make major life decisions (and determine the perfect cupcake recipe), can still be surprised when it comes to both motherhood and corporate leadership.

"I think that there's two surprising things," Mayer told the audience, comprised mostly of women, "I knew that the job would be hard and I knew that the baby would be fun. And the thing that surprised me, and really puzzlingly so, is that the job is really fun! Yahoo is a really fun place to work."?

In a television exclusive, TODAY aired excerpts of the interview this morning, which may be her last public interview for some time.

The 37-year old, Mayer, who became Yahoo's CEO while 6-months pregnant and gave birth shortly thereafter, returned to work after a two-week maternity leave, sparking debate about whether she could both lead the embattled internet giant and be a good mother.

More broadly, her story has kindled a national conversation about whether women can truly "have it all" in terms of?work-life balance. As a female CEO in the male-dominated tech world, and pregnant at that, some have pointed to her ascent as evidence of "The Fall of Men."

"What's the most important thing that you do, to get it all done?" Mayer was asked onstage at the FORTUNE event.

"You have to ruthlessly prioritize," replied Mayer. Doing interviews haven't been high on the priority list lately.?

"And that's one of the reasons I haven't been talking and I will go back to not talking after tonight."?said Mayer.

So far investors agree with how Mayer prioritizes her time. Yahoo's stock is up 18 percent since she took over.

A native of Wisconsin, Mayer cited legendary Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi as an inspiration.

"And you know Vince Lombardi says, in my life there are?three things: God, family and the Green Bay Packers, in that order. For me, it's God, family, and Yahoo, in that order."

In a few hours Mayer will join a group of CEOs meeting with President Barack Obama to?discuss their priorities for?the so-called "fiscal cliff" of tax hikes and spending cuts set to take place?Jan. 1, unless Congress acts.

Federal deficits are out of control ? averaging $1.3 trillion over the last four years ? but those are not the product of reckless Bush administration policies that must now be reversed, as Democrats relentlessly argue.

In 2007, the last year before the financial crisis, the deficit was only $161 billion ? with the Bush tax cuts and the prescription drug plan for seniors in place and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq at full tilt.

The economy has achieved some recovery ? GDP is up about $1.8 trillion from pre-recession levels. But tax revenues are down and spending in 2013 will be up a whopping $1 trillion from fiscal year 2007.

To accelerate recovery, Mr. Obama and Congress temporarily cut payroll taxes by two percentage points and enhanced some other credits and deductions in the tax code. Letting those expire on Jan. 1 would slice some $214 billion off the deficit.

Of the additional spending since the start of the financial crisis, only $360 billion was needed to accommodate inflation. More than $666 billion is new spending, originally promoted as ?temporary? to deal with the recession, but now settling in to become permanent.

Merely letting the payroll tax reduction and other temporary provisions championed by Obama lapse on Jan. 1 and returning federal spending to pre-recession levels would erase nearly $900 billion from the deficit. The Bush tax cuts need not be touched, at least not to solve today?s deficits.

The real problems are two-fold. Republicans such as Senators Saxby Chambliss, Lamar Alexander, and Lindsey Graham, who are prepared to validate Obama?s spending spree by increasing tax revenue, would like their constituents to believe they are fiscal conservatives, when it seems they really have no stomach to curb spending the nation can?t afford.

I have to be honest with you. Writing about pharmaceutical drug risks always makes me a little sad. After all, so much hope is placed on these drugs. People rely on them for healing?often for saving lives. And then the truth hits. And it hits hard.

In any decision, potential rewards must be weighed against risks. But to do that, you have to know about them in the first place. And in the case of a popular breast cancer drug, people haven?t known about the full extent of the risks since 1998 when the drug was approved by the FDA.

For those 14 years Herceptin has been used to treat breast cancer despite a known risk of heart failure. According to Herceptin?s own prescribing information it can put you at risk for a condition called cardiomyopathy, which causes your heart muscle to become thick or enlarged. This can lead to CHF, a condition in which you gradually lose heart muscle causing your heart to become less effective at pumping blood.

Now a new study, showing that the risk may be higher than anyone ever thought, is highlighting yet again why ?one size fits all? medicine is always a bad idea.

Researchers, writing for the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, are warning that if you?re a woman over the age of 67 ?your risk of developing heart failure or cardiomyopathy may be higher than what is quoted to you? by your doctor. You see, the problem is that the original estimated risks were based on studies that were done on younger, and likelier healthier, women.

In the earlier studies, the risk of heart failure was about 1.6 percent higher for women taking Herceptin. So, it was considered low. In the new study, though, the story is different.

For every 100 patients, 32 who took Herceptin and 42 who took Herceptin in combination with anthracyclines developed heart problems within 3 years. Compare that to the significantly lower 19 out of 100 among women who didn?t receive chemotherapy.

The researchers suggest that women on Herceptin need more ?monitoring.? They also want women to discuss the risks and benefits of the drug with their doctors. But the truth is Herceptin may only increase survival rates by 5 months on average according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine of Stage IV patients with HER-2 positive cancer.

Some women may look at all of the information about Herceptin and decide it?s still right for them. Others may not feel the rewards are worth the risk. But we all need to know the complete truth so we?re not making those decisions blindly.

Hero to enter Africa and Latin America by year end

The country's largest two-wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp today said it will start exporting its products to Africa and Latin America before the end of the ongoing fiscal to expand its global footprint. The company, which has started selling products under its Hero brand after the break up of the erstwhile joint venture with Hero Honda, is already selling its two-wheelers in Sri Lanka and Nepal under the new brand identity. ? ? "By the end of this fiscal year, we would have entered a few markets in Africa and Latin America," Hero MotoCorp Senior Vice-President (Marketing & Sales) Anil Dua told reporters here. He was speaking on the sidelines of felicitation of a bikers' team from Indian Air Force which crossed ten passes in the Himalayas, including four of the world's highest motorable passes using its 'Hero Impulse' motorcycle. Dua, however, did not specify the markets. In September this year, the company's Managing Director and CEO Pawan Munjal had said the company would start assembly plants in Kenya and Nigeria as it looks to expand footprint in the global markets. He had said assembly operations in Kenya was expected to kick off soon and the company had finalised a distributor there. On the Latin American market, Munjal had said the company was focusing on the Colombian market first, where it plans to have an assembly operation. Asked about the domestic market, Dua said: "The festive season has been good for the industry. Before it, there was an overall five per cent decline but I would expect we have come to the positive territory post festive season." As for Hero MotoCorp, he said the company was able to sell at an average of over 25,000 units a day during the period from the first day of 'Navratra' to a couple of days after Diwali compared to about 10,000 units prior to it. NEW YORK (AP) ? Playing the Knicks never looked or sounded so sweet for the Nets in New Jersey.

The first matchup in Brooklyn was everything they could have hoped for.

"It was just a total 180 from what we saw last year, where it was mostly Knicks fans and all the chants and all the cheers were for them. It's great to feel that we have a home-court advantage finally," point guard Deron Williams said.

"This is what they talked about. I think this is what they visualized, was games like this. This was a playoff-type atmosphere. You could definitely feel it on the court and it was a great game to be a part of."

The Nets won the crowd ? and the game ? pulling out a 96-89 overtime victory on Monday night to tie the Knicks atop the Atlantic Division on a breakthrough night for their franchise.

With their fans outnumbering and at times outchanting the Knicks' counterparts for a change, the Nets improved to 7-1 in their new home before a sellout crowd of 17,732 that was more black than blue, just the way the Nets hoped.

"Every time some sort of Knicks contingency started to cheer, our fans got louder," Nets coach Avery Johnson said.

Jerry Stackhouse, wearing the No. 42 Jackie Robinson made famous in Brooklyn, hit the tiebreaking 3-pointer with 3:31 left in overtime as the Nets controlled the extra period of a playoff-like game that neither team led by more than seven.

"It was absolutely fantastic. It was a great game for the fans," Nets center Brook Lopez said. "Having two great teams in New York, the fans are in the best position of all."

Lopez had 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Williams added 16 points and 14 assists as the Nets joined the Knicks at 9-4 amid a loud chant of "Brook-lyn! Brook-lyn!" at the finish. Stackhouse scored 14 points.

Carmelo Anthony had 35 points and 13 rebounds, but was only 10 of 16 at the free throw line and missed the potential go-ahead jumper with about 5 seconds left in regulation. Tyson Chandler finished with 28 points and 10 boards, but no other Knicks player was in double figures.

"They're across the bridge. They're here in Brooklyn. We're in the city. They're in the same division, the same sports town. I guess you can say this started something," Anthony said.

Raymond Felton was just 3 of 19 from the field, but the Knicks had to stick with him with fellow point guard and former Nets star Jason Kidd out with back spasms. Another starter, Ronnie Brewer, was lost for the overtime with a dislocated left ring finger.

"I'm upset at myself. I had a bad shooting night," Felton said. "I'm probably just as mad as any fan, any player, anybody you could think about."

The first matchup of Brooklyn and New York pro franchises since the Dodgers played the New York Giants on Sept. 8, 1957, at the Polo Grounds was loud, energetic, and close throughout. Both teams played as if this meant more than the usual regular-season game.

It's the latest the Nets have had at least a share of first place since Jan. 30, 2007, when they and Toronto were both 22-23. It's the latest the Knicks and Nets have been tied atop the division since Nov. 30, 1997.

The game was originally scheduled as the Nov. 1 season opener for both teams but was postponed after Superstorm Sandy, when much of the mass transit around the city was knocked out. Barclays Center sits above a major transportation hub, and without subways running many fans wouldn't have been able to get here.

The Knicks have always been the clear No. 1 franchise in the area, even when the Nets had Kidd and were better, and the Nets have long believed the move to Brooklyn and the $1 billion Barclays Center would help them even things. Nationally televised and with more than 100 media members, this was easily their most anticipated game in years, though Johnson denied that it meant more to the Nets than the Knicks.

"I think it's just as important for them, because if we're so much the new kid on the block and we're trying to come in and gain some territorial rights, I think they're going to try to do everything they can to push back, so I think it's great," Johnson said before the game. "I don't think it's so much of a Duke-North Carolina rivalry yet, but hopefully one day it'll get there."

Johnson estimated that games in New Jersey since he'd been with the Nets were an 80-20 fan split for the Knicks, and he hoped that would turn around Monday. It didn't flip completely, but it seemed the home team's fans made up about 60-65 percent of the crowd, the orange and blue that was long so ubiquitous harder to spot this time.

But Johnson made it clear the Nets needed to win the game, not just the crowd, for this to be a successful night, and his team was in great position up five with 4 minutes to play in regulation. The Knicks ran off eight straight to take an 84-81 lead with 1:40 left, but they wouldn't score again. Lopez tied it with a free throw with 24 seconds remaining, and after Anthony missed a jumper, Williams was off on a long attempt before the buzzer.

Chandler dunked to open overtime, but the Nets answered with eight straight points, taking the lead for good at 89-86 on Stackhouse's 3-pointer with 3:31 remaining before three straight points from Gerald Wallace, who finished with 16.

Both sides downplayed the idea of a rivalry ? yet ? leading into the game, but change was noticeable right from the start.

The Knicks were loudly booed during the announcement of starting lineups, with Anthony, a Brooklyn native whom the Nets tried to acquire before the Knicks did, receiving the type of loud, mixed response that usually goes to LeBron James.

There were dueling chants on one early possession, Knicks fans hollering "Defense! Defense!" while Nets supporters tried to drown them out with "Brook-lyn! Brook-lyn!"

The only time crowd support seemed unanimous was when local sports stars or celebrities, such as Jay-Z and Beyonce sitting near the Nets bench, were shown on the overhead scoreboard.

Reggie Evans finished with 14 rebounds for the Nets.

Argentina experienced an economic crisis from 1999 thru 2002 when the country defaulted on its debts and the economy collapsed. Mrs. Kirchner, who was elected to a second four-year term in October 2011 with 54% of the vote, appears to be in deep political trouble. To understand why, recall Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's 1976 warning that socialists "always run out of other people's money."

To the extent it has succeeded, the Kirchner economic model has relied on the 2001 default on $100 billion in debt and interest, a weak peso, protectionism, confiscation of private property, capital controls, broken contracts and high taxes. In other words, it has depended on other people's money. Now, as Mrs. Thatcher warned, that money is running out.

In the second quarter, the economy contracted by .6% year over year. The Buenos Aires-based think tank Foundation for Latin American Economic Research (known by its Spanish initials FIEL) is forecasting 2012 GDP growth of only 1.5%. Inflation is estimated by independent economists at almost 25% annually. As salaries are adjusted upward to compensate for the loss of purchasing power, workers are being pushed into higher tax brackets. Argentines traveling abroad now have to explain their plans to government bureaucrats if they want to buy hard currency.

Add these pocketbook issues to the rising rate of violent crime, recurring corruption scandals, increasing antidemocratic efforts to silence independent media outlets and pronouncements from Mrs. Kirchner's inner circle that it wants to amend the constitution to allow her to run for a third term. The Kirchner government has also angered labor leaders by letting it be known that it plans to shift union control of hundreds of millions of dollars in health-care premiums to the government.

In February of this year, The Economist had a critical article on Argentina's inflation conundrum and how it would impact the country's future. From The price of cooking the books:

Since 2007, when Guillermo Moreno, the secretary of internal trade, was sent into the statistics institute, INDEC, to tell its staff that their figures had better not show inflation shooting up, prices and the official record have parted ways. Private-sector economists and statistical offices of provincial governments show inflation two to three times higher than INDEC's number (which only covers greater Buenos Aires). Unions, including those from the public sector, use these independent estimates when negotiating pay rises. Surveys by Torcuato di Tella University show inflation expectations running at 25-30%.

PriceStats, a specialist provider of inflation rates which produces figures for 19 countries that are published by State Street, a financial services firm, puts the annual rate at 24.4% and cumulative inflation since the beginning of 2007 at 137%. INDEC says that the current rate is only 9.7%, and that prices have gone up a mere 44% over that period (see chart).

In terms of equity markets, the Merval has fallen about 9% YTD but individual Argentine stocks are down much higher. Of the 15 exchange-listed Argentine ADRs, just two are up this year.

Earlier this year, Argentina announced plans to nationalize the country's largest oil-and-gas company YPF S.A. (YPF) angering Spain since Spain-based Repsol YPF SA owned a controlling stake in YPF. Not surprisingly the YPF ADR is down nearly 70% YTD. In another market unfriendly move, a regulatory change earlier this year increased excess capital that dividend-paying financial institutions must hold from 30% to 75%. As a result, banks such as Banco Macro (BMA) were forced to suspend dividend payments.

From an investment perspective, investors can avoid investing in Argentine stocks now since there are too many variables that are difficult to predict starting with political maneuvers of populist President Cristina Kirchner. The risk to reward ratio is not favorable for investors. Until the political and economic situation improves investors can easily find plenty of better opportunities elsewhere including in neighboring Chile, Mexico or Brazil.

Twelve years ago "spyware" wasn't in most people's vocabulary, so early antispyware products like Ad-Aware and Spybot had to work on education. It's not entirely clear which of them had the first full-scale antispyware?even Spybot's creator isn't sure. But Spybot was definitely one of the first. Spybot - Search & Destroy 2.0 is the first update in a long, long time. It's now billed as a full antivirus that promises to destroy "spyware, malware, adware and other malicious software." It does no such thing.

Spybot is free for non-commercial use, though the company solicits donations. The $13.99 Home edition adds scheduled scan and a couple other features, and eliminates the nag screens. For $24.99 you get the Professional edition which, among other things, gets you access to the protected repair environment and the ability to create rescue CDs. The core antivirus protection is the same.

Some earlier editions of the product included the oddly-named TeaTimer module for realtime protection against new malware attacks. The current edition is strictly a cleanup tool.

Spybot's main window includes icons for common tasks like checking for updates, launching a scan, and checking files in quarantine. It even has an icon to donate money to the designers. Checking a box for Advanced User Mode reveals almost a dozen more icons, though not all of them are functional in the free edition.

Easy Installation
I had no trouble installing Spybot on my twelve malware-infested test systems. Avira Antivirus Free 2013, AhnLab V3 Click, and several others had difficulty with installation on a system that will only boot in Safe Mode. V3 Click actually wouldn't install at all. Spybot sailed through that installation just as it did the other eleven.

I frequently encounter problems after a scan due to over-zealous deletion of system files. F-Secure and VIPRE Antivirus 2013 needed tons of tech support work to restore damaged test systems. Spybot didn't do any damage, but that's because it didn't do much of anything.

Dismal Malware Removal
I ran an initial update on each test system. Wow, the Spybot updater is loaded with unnecessary detail, including the precise version of every component file. Once the update completed, I launched a full system scan. Spybot offers to clean up temporary files before starting a scan; I accepted its offer.

My impression of a typical virus scan is that the antivirus looks at each file and checks whether it matches a signature, or a behavior pattern, or a heuristic signature. Judging from its progress display, Spybot instead goes through its list of known malware and checks whether each is present. I noticed some venerable names like Aureate and Virtumonde in the display.

On completion, Spybot displays everything it found. This includes various types of malware, but also includes insecure system settings, tracking cookies, recently-used file lists, and other distractions. It looks like a lot, but in fact on two of my test systems Spybot missed all three of the installed malware samples.

At the end of each scan, a window pops up explaining what to do "if you suspect that Spybot might not have detected some issues that other scanners have detected." It offers to disable third party cookies (for whatever good that would do) or submit files for analysis.

Spybot detected just 32 percent of my current malware samples, knocking Anvi Smart Defender (which got 60 percent) out of last place. It did a terrible job removing the few samples it did find. Fully half of those were still running after Spybot's supposed cleanup. Spybot's overall score of 1.5 points is also a new low.

Young and reckless, Mason Redding would be considered nothing but that. As the son of a billionaire tycoon, he had been privileged and spoiled, not quite understanding the kind of lifestyle he was leading. Parties, women, drugs, Mason was the sort of man many despised and yet worshipped. His friends followed him with a zealous determination, none were genuine, especially not his best friend, (James Franco), who had as much hate towards Mason as most of his enemies possessed, but kept it under wraps. Needless to say, once Mason was pronounced dead, not many grieved, save for his family, even they had expected his eventual demise. Now, how exactly did Mason die?

Mason?s father had never imagined he?d be asking his son to get his shit together so early in his life. When Mason was twenty-one, his father, David Redding, was diagnosed with a third stage cancer, his terminal illness, however, was kept a secret from his family. Mason was given a choice, either stop his careless lifestyle and begin taking more of a leadership part in his father?s company or join the military, specifically the marines- which, his father hoped, would kick him into gear. Failing to please his father, Mason was forced to choose the latter. It was tough in the beginning, the boot camp, his family?s lack of attention. Eventually, Mason was sent overseas, and during his first mission, he?d simply disappeared during an ambush on the outskirts of an Iraqi village.

Within months of his disappearance, Mason was pronounced dead after they had found unidentified remains. And following the weeks of the pronunciation, David Redding, too, passed away, leaving a mother and a daughter grieving for both father and son. Emma, Mason?s sister, had only been twelve years old then.

However, five years later, Mason returns. His story unknown, his demeanor completely changed, his body ridden in deep scars, and his mind trying to get away from the torment of the mental trauma he has gone under. His only wish of his family, to keep his ?return? a secret. ?I need to stay dead. Nonexistent.? They oblige, for all they care is that to them, Mason is still alive? but is he well? Something has happened to him within the deserts of the Middle East, drastically changing his personality. He?s hiding something, something definitely dangerous. As of late, he?s behind the vigilante mask the police department has begun dubbing ?The Frankfort City Warden?. Others view him as a criminal, a murderer, while some view him as the modern-day Robin Hood, a savior.

Facebook and volatile market still chill IPOs

Making a killing on initial public offerings used to be easy.

At the peak of the technology boom, little more than a decade ago, a plentiful supply of companies vied to sell stock on the exchanges, and investors were assured mouthwatering returns.

These days, the deals are fewer and the returns more modest.

Companies are set to raise more than $45 billion through IPOs this year ? the most since 2007, according to data provider Dealogic. But if you scratch the surface, there are signs that the market is less healthy than it appears.

Almost a third of the money raised in IPOs this year came from one deal, Facebook's $16 billion offering in May, and the number of companies taking themselves public may end at a three-year low.

The pipeline, or backlog, of companies planning to sell stock is also thinning.

"It's a reflection of the psychology of the market today. It's not strong. It's moderate to weak," says Rob Lutts, chief investment officer at Cabot Money Management in Salem, Mass.

While 437 companies have filed for an IPO this year, 178 have withdrawn or postponed their planned listings, Dealogic data show.

The state of the IPO market matters beyond Wall Street. Besides giving investors the chance to buy into fast-growing parts of the market, offerings give companies the money to expand and hire workers.

Scott Cutler, head of global listings at NYSE Euronext, which runs the New York Stock Exchange, estimates that more than 90 percent of a public company's employee growth comes after it has listed on an exchange.

IPO activity is dictated largely by the health of the overall stock market. Falling markets discouraging companies from going public.

The Standard & Poor's 500 is up 11 percent this year, but the advance has been punctuated by sharp declines when investors fretted about European debt, the election and, now, a looming "cliff" of tax increases and government spending cuts.

"The general market has been real choppy this year. It really has," says Sal Morreale, an institutional salesman at Cantor Fitzgerald in Los Angeles who tracks offerings.

Facebook's calamitous market debut also put the brakes on IPOs.

The social networking site's offering was the most keenly anticipated market debut at least since Google's in 2004. But concerns about revenue from smartphone users spooked investors, and the offering was plagued by technical glitches.

The stock was priced at $38 and fell almost immediately, dropping as low as $17.55 on Sept. 4. The negative publicity helped shutter the IPO market for more than a month until EQT Midstream Partners, an energy company, sold stock June 16. Companies including American Tire Distributors and Crosair, a computer memory company, were among those withdrawing their IPOs.

"That deal has become a textbook case of how not to do a deal," says Quincy Krosby, a market strategist with Newark, N.J.-based Prudential Financial. "That IPO really chastened investors."

The backlog of companies planning IPOs fell to 39 in November, according to data from Ipreo, a market analysis company firm. That is the fewest since August 2009, just after the recession. The tally has been declining steadily since September 2011.

NYSE's Cutler says that much of the decline is because of a law passed in April designed to make it easier for companies to attract funding. They can confidentially notify regulators of their intention to seek a listing.

Cutler says that if the business environment remains stable, the pace of IPO filling will be "slightly up" next year as companies become more familiar with the law.

The law allows companies to avoid disclosing competitively sensitive information and come to the market at much shorter notice. Ultimately, it will encourage more companies to seek listings, Cutler says.

Despite Facebook's high-profile slump, most companies have left something on the table for investors.

The average return for IPOs this year has been 11 percent, according to Dealogic data. That's less than the average 88 percent one-year return that investors garnered in 1999, but roughly in line with the broader market.

Among the best debuts: Guidewire Software, a provider of software for the insurance industry, and Nationstar Mortgage Holdings, a Texas mortgage provider and servicer, according to data from IPO investment advisory firm Renaissance Capital.

Investors that bought Guidewire's stock at $13 at its market debut in January have seen it rise to almost $30, while Nationstar's stock has almost doubled from $14 to $27.35.

There are some advantages to a slow IPO market, says Lutts of Cabot Money Management. When demand is low, only the best companies are able to attract enough demand to list on the exchanges, raising the quality of companies coming to the market. And it can be an indicator that the broader market is oversold and thus offers some bargains.

"When we're frothy, everything is coming at a premium," Lutts says. "I'm interested in equities today because of a weak IPO market."

Dog bite sidelines 'Dirty Dozen' trumpeter Towns

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Dirty Dozen Brass Band trumpeter Efrem Towns is recovering at home in New Orleans from a vicious attack by a Rottweiler at an Atlanta motel.

He missed performances in Colorado and New Orleans after the attack on Nov. 18, and doesn't know if he'll make the band's next scheduled gig on Dec. 28, The Times-Picayune (http://bit.ly/XOJoNr) reported.

He and baritone sax player Roger Lewis said the dog surged from an open motel room door after Towns knocked on the door of Lewis' room.

"I didn't know if it was a dog, wolverine, bear, mongoose or what. I just knew something had me," Towns said.

He said the dog's owner came out of the next room, and they were able to subdue it.

At Atlanta's Grady Hospital, he received 30 stitches in his groin. Towns, who has health insurance through his wife, Tracie, said he will be seeing a urologist this week.

The Dirty Dozen Brass Band formed in 1977, and is credited with creating the contemporary, funk-infused brass band sound. It's been featured on albums with David Bowie, Elvis Costello and the Black Crowes.

Towns said he probably could practice while convalescing. "But I'm very uncomfortable right now," he said Friday evening. "I'm basically immobilized ? it's hard getting around. I'm kind of miserable."

The experience hasn't soured Towns on dogs. He and his wife own three miniature schnauzers, a standard schnauzer and a mixed breed. On Friday, his daughter's dachshund was visiting.

"I'm a dog person," he said. "And even though I got bit, I hope they don't put that dog to sleep."
