Sony's future gaming console will have an optical drive

Cloud gaming services such as Valve?s Steam are stirring up the traditional brick and mortar gaming market, but according to WSJ.com, Sony will not abandon the optical disk in its next gaming console.? Hence, the days of people collecting physical copies of video games may not come to an end after all.

In 2013, Sony will release the PlayStation 3?s successor with improved hardware while maintaining most of the same business strategies.? Sony has reported profit from its PS3 platform the last two years, and Sony?s Chief Executive, Kazuo Hirai, hopes that the new console will continue to rake in the profits.

Many brick and mortar companies that associate themselves with Sony will be at risk of incurring huge losses in revenue if Sony did decide to go the downloadable content only route in the next Sony gaming console.? GameStop, a major outlet for many PS3 games, agrees that it will need to transition to a cloud system of distributing gaming titles to remain relevant in the gaming market.? However, as with any major industry transitions, it will take some time to adopt.

"If we all agree the technology is inevitable?which I think it is because it's like death and taxes?it's still going to take longer to happen than it did for music and movies," GameStop?s CEO, Paul Raines, commented about the gaming market?s transition to a cloud based platform.?

Perhaps Sony is trying to maintain a good relation between itself and its business partners by opting to keep the optical drive as the main mean of software decoding.? However, that does not mean that Sony is unaware of the inevitable market transition to the clouds.? Sony intend to integrate more downloadable contents into its future console, more than it currently has in its PS3 console.?

In addition to maintaining good relationships with its partners, Sony believes that worldwide internet connections are not stable enough for it to make a complete transition to downloadable only contents.? Sony wants its product to be in the hands of as many people as possible, and to make a product that requires a fast and stable internet connection only limits that objective.

Sony's future gaming console will have an optical drive

Until Sony releases a cloud only console, those of us that have shelves of PlayStations CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays may continue tout our tangible collections for the world to envy.

Brazil beats sloppy US 4-1 as Neymar stars

By RONALD BLUM

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:26 a.m. ET May 31, 2012

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) - Brazil had its way with the U.S. soccer team, with the stars in the famous yellow jerseys dribbling past the Americans and generally pushing them around for the first half-hour.

Neymar had another dazzling night against the United States, scoring one goal and setting up two more to lead the five-time World Cup champions to a 4-1 victory in an exhibition Wednesday night.

"We need to get an edge more nastier," said U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann, the former German star and coach. "Maybe we're a little bit still too naive. Maybe we don't want to hurt people. But that's what we've got to do. You've got to do that at the end of the day. So we've got to step on their toes more and get them more frustrated and make a case with the referee maybe as well, for us, not only the opponent."

Thiago Silva, Marcelo and Alexandre Pato also scored for Brazil, playing the opener of a three-game U.S. tour.

Herculez Gomez, in his first start since the 2010 World Cup, scored for the U.S., which is preparing for its opening qualifier for the 2014 World Cup on June 8.

"Four-one was maybe not a scoreline that was indicative of the overall game. I think for long stretches of that game we kind of imposed our will on them," Gomez said. "I think the main difference was they were clinical in front of goal and we weren't."

Neymar, the 20-year-old Santos sensation, put Brazil ahead in the 12th minute after a hand ball on Oguchi Onyewu on Leandro Damiao's shot, a call the Americans disputed with referee Jeffrey Calderon of Puerto Rico. Neymar then took a corner kick that Thiago Silva headed in for his first international goal in the 26th.

Gomez cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 45th following a fine run by Michael Bradley and cross by Fabian Johnson. But before an enthusiastic crowd of 67,619 at FedEx Field, Marcelo restored the two-goal lead in the 52nd as Jermaine Jones, Onyewu and American captain Carlos Bocanegra left him unmarked in front of the net. Pato entered in the 64th and added a goal in the 87th that the U.S. claimed was offside.

"We're the only team in the world that gets homered at home. It's unbelievable sometimes," Bocanegra said.

Klinsmann, a German who move to California with his American-born wife after retiring as a player in 1998, said the U.S. team has to be more assertive with officials.

"You watch big teams in the world, what they do, and there's a call going against them - Barcelona is one of them - they come with 10 guys towards the referee," he said. "The referee is confused. He doesn't know even know who to show a yellow card."

Landon Donovan said "that's not really in our character as Americans."

"We try to play the game fair," Donovan said. "We don't really dive. We don't do those kind of things."

Brazil, which receives an automatic berth as the 2014 World Cup host, improved to 16-1 against the U.S. with a 35-11 goal difference.

Neymar, coveted by many European clubs, called it an efficient win.

"It's not every day that one can come and apply all sorts of dribbles, between the legs, over the head," he said through a translator. "It was a good test to play with a tough team like the U.S."

Brazil coach Mano Menezes used mostly a roster than can go to the Olympics - limited primarily to players under 23

"Since the beginning, I knew we could trust them, building with this team, blending them with more experienced players," he said, also using a translator. "We blended to try to well balance the different sectors, and their response was very good."

Following a 1-4-1 start under Klinsmann, the Americans had won five in a row, including an impressive 1-0 victory at Italy and a 5-1 win last weekend over a Scotland team that already appeared to be on summer vacation.

Against sixth-ranked Brazil, the No. 29 Americans played more offensively than in the 2-0 loss at the Meadowlands two years ago, when they were outshot 20-7. This time the U.S. had a 15-12 advantage in shots.

Klinsmann continued to tinker with his front line because Jozy Altidore didn't arrive until Monday, and Clint Dempsey is recovering from a groin strain. Dempsey entered in the 57th minute, marking the first time he played with Donovan since Klinsmann replaced Bob Bradley as coach last July.

Gomez almost got another goal in the 64th, but his header off Johnson's cross was cleared off the goal line by Romula. Three minutes later, Neymar found a streaking Pato in front of the goal, but his shot bounced off goalkeeper Tim Howard's near post.

Brazil goalkeeper Rafael Cabral, making his Brazil national team debut, had a fine double save in the 76th, stopping Gomez with his left hand, then kicking away Terrence Boyd's effort. Cabral leaped to palm Bradley's header over the crossbar in the 85th, and Onyewu headed the ball off the crossbar on Donovan's free kick.

U.S. players were angry - but not that much, given it wasn't a game that counted.

"At the end of the day, we got caught a couple times, and that's what happens," Howard said. "The second half we mixed it up a little bit. We probably need to try to impose that will and try to turn it into a scrap earlier than we did."

Abelson honored as outstanding educator | Regina's List

Hal Abelson has been honored by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) with the Karl V. Karlstom Outstanding Educator Award for his contributions to computer science education. Abelson is the Class of 1922 Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT, a principal investigator at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and co-chair of the MIT Council on Educational Technology.

For Abelson, being honored for his work as an educator is a crowning achievement.

?Of all the ways to be honored, for me education is the one that really means the most,? Abelson says. ?That?s how I think of myself at MIT, as a teacher.?

Abelson was honored by the ACM for innovative advances in curricula designed for students pursuing different kinds of computing expertise. Along with Professor Gerry Sussman (also a principal investigator at CSAIL), Abelson developed MIT?s introductory computer science course, ?Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs.? The course was revolutionary in that it introduced a new method for teaching computer science that de-emphasized programming language specifics and concentrated on the mathematical idea of abstraction as a fundamental concept in programming.

Throughout his career, Abelson has been dedicated to democratizing access to education through computer science. Through his work with the MIT Council on Educational Technology, he played a key role in launching MIT OpenCourseWare, a web-based publication of MIT course content accessible to all, and D-Space, MIT?s online repository of digital research materials, with the goal of using the Internet to provide equal access to the learning and education underway at universities.

Abelson is currently working on a new tool called App Inventor, which allows individuals with no computer science background to program and develop mobile applications. With this technology, Abelson?s goal is to empower all individuals ? and children in particular ? by giving them the ability to contribute to the creation of new technologies. Through App Inventor, people around the world have developed a wide variety of new programs, from applications that remind people not to text while driving to an application created by students in Arkansas that tracks wild hog sightings.

Abelson?s interest in providing children with access to technology was inspired by his work as a graduate student at MIT on the Logo Programming Language, which was designed as a tool for educating children. In the same way that he was inspired to put computers into the hands of children in the 1970s, today Abelson hopes to make mobile computing available to all.

According to Abelson, ?App Inventor takes that sense of empowerment, that notion of, ?Why shouldn?t 12-year-olds be in control of mobile phones or tablets or the next branch of mobile technology?? There are real opportunities for computer science to have an impact on education in the future.?

Abelson is a fellow of the IEEE and is co-director of MIT?s Center for Mobile Learning. He received MIT?s Bose Award, the IEEE Computer Society Taylor L. Booth Education Award for continued contributions to the pedagogy and teaching of introductory computer science, and the ACM Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education (SIGCSE) Award for outstanding contributions to computer science education.

The Karl V. Karlstom Outstanding Educator Award is presented annually to an outstanding educator who is appointed to a recognized educational baccalaureate institution. The recipient is recognized for advancing new teaching methodologies; effecting new curriculum development or expansion in computer science and engineering; or making a significant contribution to the educational mission of ACM. A prize of $ 5,000 is supplied by Pearson Education.

The ACM will present this award at the ACM Awards Banquet on June 16 in San Francisco.

Ford, State Farm Collaborate to Offer Auto Insurance Savings Using ...

DEARBORN, Mich. and BLOOMINGTON, Ill., May 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

  • Ford SYNC?-equipped drivers could save up to 40 percent per year through the State Farm Drive Safe & Save insurance discount program depending on their annual mileage
  • The discount is based on the vehicle odometer reading that is reported when the driver uses Vehicle Health Report, a standard feature of SYNC available on 2009 model year and newer Ford Motor Company vehicles

The nation's No. 2 automaker and the country's leading insurer of cars have joined forces to offer lower insurance premiums for drivers. Using Ford SYNC? technology, State Farm Insurance is expanding its Drive Safe & Save? program.

The program allows State Farm customers with select SYNC-equipped Ford Motor Company vehicles to reduce their auto insurance premiums by using the Vehicle Health Report feature to report their mileage.

The magnitude of the savings will be determined by the number of miles they drive. Those choosing to enroll in the program will initially save about 5 percent on their auto insurance coverage. The amount of premium savings will be determined at each renewal date (every six months) based on the number of miles driven during that period. Those driving the national average of 1,000 miles per month will typically save around 10 percent, but that could change depending on actual mileage driven, with low-mileage drivers saving up to 40 percent.

"We're excited to have Ford as a partner in this effort," said State Farm Senior Vice President Mike Wey. "State Farm is always looking for better ways to serve our customers."

Ford SYNC is the industry-leading in-car connectivity system that provides drivers with the ability to voice command and control their mobile devices, like cell phones and MP3 players, and provides services such as 911 Assist?, an emergency calling feature, and Vehicle Health Report. Vehicle Health Report is a standard, no-subscription feature that allows owners to request a diagnostic report about their vehicle's performance and maintenance needs. Since Vehicle Health Report pulls the odometer reading directly from the engine computer, the mileage from the report is considered verified and can be shared with State Farm representatives to qualify the vehicle for Drive Safe & Save.

"We're very pleased to be working with State Farm to lower the cost of vehicle ownership for the three million Ford SYNC owners who are driving vehicles with the Vehicle Health Report feature," said Doug VanDagens, Ford Connected Services global director. "SYNC Vehicle Health Report is free for the life of the vehicle, so our customers can qualify for insurance discounts without having to pay a monthly subscription."

State Farm's Drive Safe & Save program for Ford SYNC will initially launch in Utah then roll out to other states.

Second-gen IOIO in the works, embraces the wireless revolution

Ytai Ben-Tsvi's IOIO board is quite the hit with the Android-hacking DIY crowd. But, that doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement on the $50 dev board. A second-gen version is in the works that adds the ability to connect to a computer as a USB device (not just as a host) or via Bluetooth, without the need for a intermediary controller like an Arduino. Perhaps most exciting for those interested in tinkering with DIY Android phone accessories, is the plan to cut the price of the new IOIO. How much less the next version will cost isn't clear yet, but even just $5 could make a major difference. For more details check out Ytai's blog post at the source link.

Froth, frocks and film at an anxiety-tinged Cannes

(AP) ? There was Brad Pitt and Nicole Kidman, red carpet glamour and a crop of new Academy Award contenders ? but this was also the year the global financial crisis exploded onto movie screens at Cannes.

"La Crise" ? as the French call it ? bedeviled Robert Pattinson's disaster-bound billionaire in David Cronenberg's "Cosmopolis," the unemployed Glasgow youth in Ken Loach's "The Angels' Share," the bare-knuckle boxer in Jacques Audiard's "Rust and Bone" and the worried mobsters in Andrew Dominik's "Killing Them Softly."

We live in anxious times, and that feeling was reflected at the French Riviera film festival that's a byword for frocks and froth, as well as for serious cinema.

The mood seemed to be mirrored by the weather. Several days were unseasonably cold and stormy, turning red-carpet photocalls into rain-lashed ordeals.

In the face of this angst, the jury rewarded love, giving Cannes' top prize, the Palme d'Or, to Austrian director Michael Haneke for "Amour," a starkly powerful film about an elderly couple coping with the wife's worsening health.

Second and third prizes went to Matteo Garrone's Italian satire "Reality" and Ken Loach's whiskey-tasting comedy "The Angels' Share," and there were acting honors for Denmark's Mads Mikkelsen for "The Hunt" and Romania's Cristina Flutur and Cosmina Stratan for "Beyond the Hills."

Although the festival had a strong American flavor, there were no prizes for a batch of films that examined the United States, past and present ? often through the lens of non-American directors.

Australia's John Hillcoat depicted Prohibition-era bootleggers in "Lawless" and Brazil's Walter Salles crossed the country in his adaptation of Jack Kerouac's Beat classic "On the Road." New Zealand-born Dominik set "Killing Them Softly," a thriller starring Brad Pitt as a worldly Mob enforcer, against the backdrop of the 2008 U.S. presidential election, while Canada's Cronenberg sent Pattinson's stretch limo across a Manhattan of security threats and Occupy-style protests.

Cronenberg said that "it seemed at points that we were working more on a documentary."

American directors also looked long and hard at their country. Lee Daniels stirred the sexual and racial politics of the 1960s South into a death-row thriller in "The Paperboy," while Jeff Nichols' "Mud" spun a modern-day "Huckleberry Finn" story among Mississippi River fishing families whose way of life is threatened.

It would not be the Cannes Film Festival without moments of controversy ? and craziness.

The former was provided by the absence of any female directors from the 22 films in the festival's main competition. The situation drew letters and petitions in France and the United States, and even a small protest by feminist group La Barbe in front of Cannes' famous red carpet.

Cannes director Thierry Fremaux responded that he chose films solely on merit, but the festival promised to make a greater effort to hunt down films by women.

The baffling and bizarre were provided by the surreal appearance of the devil in a Mexican family home in Carlos Reygadas' "Post Tenebras Lux" ? which won the directing prize ? and by pretty much everything, including a parking lot full of talking stretch limos, in Leos Carax's "Holy Motors."

While Carax's mysterious meditation on performance and reality is unlikely to tempt Hollywood's Academy, there was plenty at Cannes that will.

There was no film this year with the obvious mainstream crossover appeal of last year's breakout Cannes movie, "The Artist," which went on to win five Oscars.

That film was acquired by The Weinstein Co., which this year has picked up "The Sapphires," a buoyant musical about an Australian Aboriginal girl group that played out of competition at Cannes. It plans a fall release in the U.S.

The likeliest candidate for an Oscars boost may be "Mud," an assured and moving third feature from 33-year-old director Nichol. The film gives Matthew McConaughey a standout role as a mystic-minded fugitive holed up on an island in the Mississippi, and also draws powerfully natural performances from child actors Tye Sheridan and Jacob Lofland.

McConaughey also appears in "The Paperboy," which features an attention-grabbing performance from Kidman as a sultry femme fatale. It could win her an Oscar nomination, and there could also be one for Marion Cotillard's intense performance as a killer whale trainer who has a tragic workplace accident in "Rust and Bone."

And there's likely to be a solid audience for "Killing Them Softly," a taut, 1970s-style crime thriller that sees Pitt play cynical straight man to some outstanding character acting from the likes of James Gandolfini and Ray Liotta.

Cannes is a strange blend of high-art seriousness and Hollywood chutzpah, where the latest Haneke masterwork coexists with Sacha Baron Cohen riding a camel down the seaside Croisette as "The Dictator."

Even for showbiz veterans, it can be a remarkable experience, as McConaughey discovered at the gala premiere of "The Paperboy."

"It got a wonderful ovation and I've never experienced that," he said. "I've never done stage, and so I've never really experienced an immediate response live like that. It was nice to take a breath and say, 'Feel this. Feel this, McConaughey. This is a special, once-in-a-lifetime thing.'"

Planninga from Nanninga: A Strategic Planning Blog: Strategic ...

THE STORY
A few days ago, I wanted to get an idea of what I might save if I changed my insurance.? I went to a web site to get a FREE estimate.? All it asked was a small handful of questions.? Then I hit the ?submit? button.

Almost immediately after hitting that button, my phone started ringing.? It was someone offering to talk to me about insurance.? At first, I thought that was an odd coincidence, since the insurance company which called was representing a different company than the one on the internet. ?While I was talking to this new company on the phone, I got three messages on my phone saying that three other insurance companies were also trying to contact me.?

For the next four days, my phone rang virtually non-stop from dozens upon dozens upon dozens of insurance companies eager to talk to me about my insurance.? It was a nightmare that wouldn?t stop.

I soon realized that I did not receive a FREE service from that internet site.? I paid dearly with time and aggravation.??

I also began to realize that I had never really been a ?customer? for that web site.? No, I was the ?product.? ?They were trying to sell me like a slave to all of these bidding insurance companies.?

Just before hitting that ?submit? button, I did not see anything in the fine print saying I agreed to sell my soul to that company (for no charge) nor that I agreed they could re-sell me like a slave in a bidding auction.

And then, after all that aggravation, I decided that my current insurance was a better deal and did not switch to any of those companies.

THE ANALOGY

In the story, I was initially confused about what was the product and who was the customer. ?At first, I thought that I was the customer and the insurance was the product.? As it turned out, I was the product and competing insurance companies bidding for me were the customer.? ?

A similar confusion can happen when designing strategic business plans.? A successful business plan sells a product (or service) to a customer.? And hopefully, the cost to the business of obtaining or manufacturing/producing that product is less than the price the customer is willing to pay for it, so that you can make a profit.

As we will see in this blog, there are a lot of choices one can make regarding products and customers.? And the most obvious choices might not be the most profitable choices.? Therefore, careful consideration needs to be given to these choices.? It should be an important part in the development of one?s strategy.

In addition, if you are not clear in your business plan as to what is the product and who is the customer, you may create confusion within your organization.? People could focus on producing the wrong thing for the wrong person.? The confusion could create inefficiencies and reduce the profitability of the business model.

?

THE PRINCIPLE
The principle here is that depending upon how you define the customer and the product, you?ll come up with a different strategy.? And if you want an innovative new strategy, consider less-conventional definitions of products and customers. Usually, we think of the people we are appealing to (or advertising to) as the customer.? However, as we saw in the story, you can also look upon these people as the product you are selling.

There?s a popular saying that goes something like this: ?If the customer is not paying, then they are not really the customer?they are merely the product being sold to the one who is really paying.?

There could be many options for the real customers who are bidding for your ?human slave? product.
a) Insurance Companies ? In the story, we saw insurance companies as the real customer.? But here?s another example.? Ever see those commercials on TV where lawyers offer to represent you for free if you suffered from something where a lawyer can successfully sue for damages?? You are not the customer.? You are product, being ?sold? to the insurance company on the hook to pay damages.?
b) Government ? Governments hand out all sorts of money for things like health care, aid to the poor, help for the disadvantaged, etc.? There are plenty of opportunities to represent people in order to tap into government funds.? The people are the product you are selling to the government.? For example, consider all of those TV advertisements for medical devices and supplies.? The commercial says that this stuff is FREE to you, provided you are on government medical assistance.? Another example is commercial universities which aggressively manufacture students in order to tap government student loan assistance.

?

c) Advertisers ? Advertisers are buying exposure to their ads.? That exposure is to people, so what they are really buying are people.? Therefore, the media are not really selling their media as much as they are selling the people they attract to the media.? So much of the internet business models are based on giving their content away for free in order to attract other sources of income, like advertising.? When you use these internet sites, you are the product being sold, like when Google sells you in order to get paid ads on their search page.? When internet companies talk about monetizing their sites, what they are really saying is that they are looking for more ways to sell you to more people. d) Investors - For a lot of start-up companies, the original proposal is not the same as what eventually ends up being the business model.? The service can change and the target market can change.? Knowing this, start-ups understand that the real customer is the investor in the start-up.? The people lured to the start-up are merely the product.? The real selling pitch is to the investment community, because they are the only one paying the bills in the start-up phase.? If the investor wants something else, you change the model to please them, because they are the customer.
Using your imagination, I?m sure you can think of a lot of additional customer types which differ from the users (like parents for children?s products, large employers for daycare centers, future acquirers for small start-ups, etc.).
2) Manufacturing the Right Kind of Slaves If people are merely slaves to be sold in your business model, then you need to think about them differently.? You are in the business of manufacturing people.? Therefore, you need to think of them in the same way other manufacturers think about their product. When developing a manufacturing a process, a manufacturer must consider several things, including the QUALITY of the product (% of defects), the APPROPRIATENESS of the product (is it what the customer really desires), the FUNCTIONALITY of the product (does it deliver on the desired features), and the PRICE of the product (can you manufacture it cheaply enough).
So, if you?re selling people, you need to consider these same things about your people-manufacturing model.? It?s not just about gathering lots of people.? They need to be the right people (with the right quality, appropriateness, functionality and price).? And what is ?right? depends on the people who are paying the bills (your real customer).?
That?s why it?s so important to clearly define the real customer.? Otherwise you won?t know what they want so you won?t manufacture the right kind of people.
Think about Disney.? One of the most important products Disney creates are people who pay to surround themselves (or someone they love) with manifestations of an icon.? In other words, their best product is someone who would buy everything associated with one of their icons, like Buzz Lightyear.? These are the people who buy all the Buzz Lightyear videos, toys, games, dolls, amusement park rides, posters, pajamas, sheets, underwear, and whatever else the image of Buzz Lightyear is on.? Disney sells this person to all of its divisions as well as to any business who wants to license the icon.
Therefore, the manufacturing of an icon lover goes something like this.? First you create an icon.? Then you create a way to get people to fall in love with the icon (like a movie).? Next, you create all the tie-ins to all the ways for this icon lover person/product to be valuable to others.? Then you sell this person to them, principally through licensing fees.
Therefore, Disney?s goal is not just to have a movie which draws a lot of people.? It has to be the right kind of people?icon lovers.? That?s why the movies are designed to create lovable icons more than to create great entertainment.? Those creating the movie have to understand that in order efficiently manufacture the right kind of movie-goers.
Internet sites need to see themselves in a similar fashion.? The goal is not just to attract a lot of eyeballs.? They need to be eyeballs specifically manufactured to appeal to someone who wants to buy those kinds of eyeballs. ???And you cannot do this if you don?t specifically plan the whole thing as seamless manufacturing process. ??
And if you want to justify your marketing effort to manufacture that person, use the same type of criteria used to justify efficient manufacturing.? Is it the right type of product and is it produced at a lower cost than you can sell it to others for?
SUMMARY
The real customer is the one who gives you the money.? And in many business models, these customers give you the money in order to access the people you have accumulated.? To optimize this model, one needs to clearly identify the real customer and then find the most efficient way to manufacture the type of people these customers specifically want.? FINAL THOUGHTS
This is a two-step strategy.? First you manufacture something to lure the right type of people.? Then you package these people so that they are the most desirable to the people who will pay for them.? In the end, that insurance web site didn?t care if I was made happy (which I wasn?t).? What they wanted was to make those other insurance sellers happy, because they were the customer.? I was merely the second stage of their manufacturing process.

Travel Insurance Woes & Tips - (Geneva) - Ski Chatter

Travel Insurance Woes

Some of you may recall that in February I had my rucksack stolen on the train into Geneva Airport. Key items taken were an SLR camera, video camera, mobile 'phone and clothing. These were covered by a combination of my Ecclesiastical Home Contents and a major brand Travel Insurance. Whilst Ecclesiastical have been brilliant ? operating over email and accepting scanned documents ? my other insurer (with only 1/3rd the value in liability) has been a nightmare - insisting on paper-based forms, letters, and an endless cycle of requests for clarification and the same information multiple times.

Many of you will be renewing your travel insurance over the summer, so here is some advice based on my (continuing) battle with my travel insurer:

You may have a Big Name insurance retailer, but the travel claim is likely to be handled by one man, an aged PC and four underpaid teenagers in a dingy office. The sole target of the claims handler is to stretch out the claims process to the point where you give up.

* Buy travel insurance from a retailer who is underwritten by a major insurer who does their own claims handling. No subcontracted claims management.

Even the best insurance companies only have a 5-day turn-around policy. You submit something ? they wait 5 days to reply ? they ask for clarification ? you reply ? they wait 5 days ?. and so on. Any and every inconsistency and omission will be dragged out. Moreover, your policy will have a maximum claim total ? if a few items hit this ceiling anyway, then don't cloud it with trivia that just gives them an excuse to prevaricate.

* Only claim for Big Ticket items that you have full receipts and documentation for. Forget about stolen/lost gloves, pyjamas, plug adapters etc.

* You need documentation for everything. And even then it may not be acceptable. In particular you must have

Police Report + Full Inventory of Stolen Items.
Airline Report + Full inventory of Damaged/lost goods.
Proof of Travel
Original Invoices/Charges (how many of you have the original invoices handy for everything? Really?)

* Try and determine up-front just what is acceptable documentation. This will save endless cycles of submission/clarification.

* Think how you will handle the old "We have no proof of ever having received this ?" ? If at all possible retain original receipts.

* Proof of Travel ? Clarify just what constitutes Proof of Travel. An easyJet Boarding Pass? A web invoice?

Communicate by letter so you have documentary evidence. Remember the 5-Day rule.
Telephoning is OK for preparation, but while in submission, no one will recall what is said

So far, the most ludicrous query was when they asked how old my pyjamas were, so they could adjust the replacement ?18 purchase price for wear-and-tear (when the other items mean that I've hit their ?1,500 liability ceiling). This sort of thing is par for the course, sadly .......

Orion clean room subs filters, fans for ceiling

ScienceDaily (May 28, 2012) ? Turns out a clean room doesn't necessarily need a roof, NASA is finding out as it tries out a design that could be assembled around the Orion spacecraft as it is prepared for launch in the Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The key to the concept, developed by Astrotech, is two 10-foot-high walls of filter-equipped fans positioned 30 feet apart to push and pull the air in one direction across the capsule, keeping particles from settling on the spacecraft's surface.

A set of clear walls completes the box, but there is no ceiling. That's important because engineers want to use the large cranes already in the VAB to lift the Orion spacecraft and its shell into place as it is assembled on top of the Space Launch System rocket. If they have to build a clean room with its own crane, the cost would be much higher.

"The guys over in the Operations and Checkout Building are using this and that's what gave us the idea," said Doug Lenhardt, an engineer with NASA's Ground Systems Development and Operations Program. "It's pretty innovative, so we'll see if it works."

The test, which involves a room built around a full-scale Orion model, has been running for two weeks on the floor of High Bay 3 in the VAB and will continue another two to three weeks.

"The results have been encouraging," Lenhardt said. "We don't have the full story yet, but it's been encouraging.

The demands of a clean room in the VAB are not nearly as strict as those in the Operations and Checkout Building hangar where the Orion capsule will be built. In fact, the technicians in the O&C are already working with a similar setup to build the capsule components into a working spacecraft. Because even a slight contaminant can create problems inside a capsule, the O&C's entire high bay is kept to high cleanliness standards with the area around Orion given an extra layer of protection.

In the VAB, the requirement is to keep visible contaminants, such as specks of dirt and dust, off the outside of the capsule.

It may not sound like a big deal for something that will be exposed to space, but an earthly bit of pollen or sand or even a human hair can confuse a star tracker, lead to a build up around an exhaust port or block a thruster, for example.

And there are lots of particles looking for a place to settle in the VAB, especially when the doors are open and wind is swirling around.

"Conditions in the VAB are bad. It is much worse than being outside," said Walt Turner, senior integration engineer with Sierra Lobo. "It's like we have a dust creator."

The amount of particles in the VAB surprised John Weeks, an operations engineer overseeing the clean room evaluation.
