Tunisia frees Salafist sheikh expelled by Egypt | Morocco World News

TUNIS, April 5, 2013 (AFP)

Tunisia freed on Friday a Salafist sheikh?arrested on arrival after being expelled by Egypt for falsifying travel papers?for jihadists, saying he was not guilty, the justice ministry said.

Tunisian Imed ben Salah, also known as Abou Abdallah Ettounsi, was arrested?on March 21 and ordered out of Egypt, according to press reports, for?organising the falsification of documents to help jihadists travel to combat?zones.

??The prosecutor freed Imed ben Salah, in the absence of a crime being?committed,? ministry spokesman Adel Riahi told AFP, adding that he was freed?late on Thursday.

When Ben Salah arrived at Tunis airport earlier on Thursday, he was?arrested amid a tight security presence after radical Islamist websites called?for a big turnout to welcome him.

Police manned checkpoints around the airport to keep Salafists away from?the building, an AFP photographer reported, and armed police with dogs?patrolled the arrivals hall.

Since its January 2011 revolution, Tunisia has witnessed a proliferation of?jihadist groups, which have been blamed for a wave of deadly attacks, notably?on the US embassy in Tunis last September that left four of the assailants dead.

Tunisia?s government has warned of jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda?s?north African franchise infiltrating the country?s borders and trafficking?weapons, notably to northern Mali.

The judiciary opened an investigation in mid-March into a network?recruiting and sending Tunisians to fight Syrian President Bashar al-Assad?s?forces alongside Islamist insurgents.

?Tunisia?s secular opposition accuses the government, led by Prime Minister?Ali Larayedh of the Islamist Ennahda party, of having a lax attitude towards?radical Islamism.

Ewes-full: Paris hires sheep to mow city lawns

PARIS (AP) ? Will the future see flocks of sheep baaing beneath the Eiffel Tower and bleating by Notre Dame cathedral?

Paris is enlisting a few hungry sheep to keep the city's grass trim, replacing gas-guzzling lawnmowers.

The initiative, which started this week, sees four sheep from an island in Brittany put to work munching the bountiful grass of the Paris Archives.

The eco-experiment, which could expand around the capital from October, follows on from a stint last year by two goats that the Louvre hired to mow the lawn of Paris' famed Tuileries gardens.

Already, private companies have hundreds of operational sheep mowing lawns of big companies around Paris.

"(It') efficient... and cheap," says Paris City Hall's Fabienne Giboudeaux. "I can imagine this very easily in London. And New York... even Tokyo."

Don't call it vaporware: Scientists use cloud of atoms as optical memory device

Apr. 3, 2013 ? Talk about storing data in the cloud. Scientists at the Joint Quantum Institute (JQI) of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of Maryland have taken this to a whole new level by demonstrating* that they can store visual images within quite an ethereal memory device -- a thin vapor of rubidium atoms. The effort may prove helpful in creating memory for quantum computers.

Their work builds on an approach developed at the Australian National University, where scientists showed that a rubidium vapor could be manipulated in interesting ways using magnetic fields and lasers. The vapor is contained in a small tube and magnetized, and a laser pulse made up of multiple light frequencies is fired through the tube. The energy level of each rubidium atom changes depending on which frequency strikes it, and these changes within the vapor become a sort of fingerprint of the pulse's characteristics. If the field's orientation is flipped, a second pulse fired through the vapor takes on the exact characteristics of the first pulse -- in essence, a readout of the fingerprint.

"With our paper, we've taken this same idea and applied it to storing an image -- basically moving up from storing a single 'pixel' of light information to about a hundred," says Paul Lett, a physicist with JQI and NIST's Quantum Measurement Division. "By modifying their technique, we have been able to store a simple image in the vapor and extract pieces of it at different times."

It's a dramatic increase in the amount of information that can be stored and manipulated with this approach. But because atoms in a vapor are always in motion, the image can only be stored for about 10 milliseconds, and in any case the modifications the team made to the original technique introduce too much noise into the laser signal to make the improvements practically useful. So, should the term vaporware be applied here after all? Not quite, says Lett -- because the whole point of the effort was not to build a device for market, but to learn more about how to create memory for next-generation quantum computers.

"What we've done here is store an image using classical physics. However, the ultimate goal is to store quantum information, which a quantum computer will need," he says. "Measuring what the rubidium atoms do as we manipulate them is teaching us how we might use them as quantum bits and what problems those bits might present. This way, when someone builds a solid-state system for a finished computer, we'll know how to handle them more effectively."

Obesity without the health problems? There could be a way

Apr. 4, 2013 ? Obesity is linked to the widespread epidemics of diabetes and heart disease that plague society, but a lesser-known fact is that the weight can also lead to autoimmune disease. Now, researchers have new information about how that damaging immune response happens and how it might be stopped, published on April 4 in Cell Reports, a Cell Press publication.

The key, they show, may be to block an important element known as AIM (for apoptosis inhibitor of macrophage) in the bloodstream and, ultimately, the production of antibodies that attack the self.

The discovery is especially notable because the team of researchers, from the University of Tokyo and led by Toru Miyazaki, previously discovered AIM, linking it to the inflammation that comes with obesity. They also showed that its suppression could help prevent obesity-associated diabetes and atherosclerosis. Their new work extends those benefits of AIM suppression to include autoimmune disease.

"Our report for the first time explains how obesity causes an initial autoimmune response, namely production of multiple antibodies against self-antigens, and also defines a key molecule in this autoimmune process," Miyazaki said.

The researchers found that a natural immunoglobulin called IgM rises in the blood of mice fed on a high-fat diet. The rise in IgM results as fatty acids stimulate particular immune cells. Furthermore, IgM binds to AIM, and this complex is retained in the blood rather than excreted in urine. The researchers propose that the prolonged presence of IgM-AIM in the blood may contribute to the production of auto-antibodies. Correspondingly, they find that obese mice lacking AIM are protected from that harmful autoimmune response.

"Suppression of AIM appears to intercept two different obesity-associated pathological immune responses, namely, chronic inflammation based on innate immunity and autoantibody production based on humoral immunity," the researchers wrote. "Thus, AIM inhibition potentially could be used as a therapy to prevent not only insulin resistance and metabolic disorders but also autoimmunity under obese conditions."

Miyazaki's team says that human studies are needed to pursue the development of a new AIM-targeted obesity therapy.

Limited Access to Mental Health Care for Youth, Teens A new national survey reveals that many adults believe children and teens do not received needed mental health services.

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation commissioned the National Voices Project to facilitate a five-year study of how adults who work and volunteer every day on behalf of children perceive access to mental health services for kids and teens on a local community level.

?The adults in the National Voices Project survey work or volunteer on behalf of kids. These are the adults who are perhaps best positioned to refer children and teens to the health care services they need,? says Matthew M. Davis, M.D., M.A.P.P.

Survey participants were asked how much availability there is in their communities for children and teens to receive health care services.

More than half of all respondents note that there is ?lots of availability? for teens to have hospital care (55 percent) and primary care (56 percent) in their communities.

But across all health care services, only 30 percent of respondents reported ?lots of availability? for mental health care. Health care availability for children was very similar.

?These findings indicate low availability of mental health care for children and teens in the majority of communities across the U.S.,? Davis said.

?Even in communities where there are lots of opportunities for children and teens to get primary care or hospital care, access to mental health care is lacking.?

In communities where respondents perceived racial/ethnic inequities, survey responders consistently reported less access to all health care services, including mental health ? especially for teens.

Experts say that survey results show that where there are perceived inequities at the community level there are also perceptions of diminished opportunities for young children and teens in the domains of nutrition, health, and health care.
