PFT: Steelers' Wallace to end holdout

Shaun Rogers, Sedrick EllisAP

The Giants initially announced that defensive tackle Shaun Rogers would miss the season because of a blood clot in his left calf.

But coach Tom Coughlin told reporters Tuesday ?there?s a ray of hope.?

?We?re just going to hang in there as long as we can,? Coughlin said, via Jorge Castillo of the Newark Star-Ledger. ?There is a chance that he could come back and play. It?s what we?ve been told so we?re just going to hang in there as long as we can and see if we can, see if they can determine where he is and how fast he would be able to play and all of that stuff.?

The Giants were disappointed at the initial diagnosis for reasons that transcend the rash of injuries. Coughlin called it ?sad,? and noted how Rogers had lost 50 pounds over the offseason to get himself in shape.

They never put him on injured reserve, cutting others instead to make roster space. Rogers rode a stationary bike during practice Tuesday, wearing shorts and a practice jersey.

Initially, they thought the bood thinning medicaiton would prevent his return. But a second opinion gave them hope he could play again this year.

?He is on a different kind of medication and that medication is supposedly something that can be dealt with after a certain amount of time,? Coughlin said. ?Whether it?s 5, 6 weeks, whatever, I?m not sure.?

While the Giants will be glad to see him return to the lineup, a return to health after a serious condition is more important.
